6 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013 EXPLORE YOUR BORO COMES TO THE LIC FLEA There’s always been okonomiyaki, scallion pancakes, and noodles with peanut dressing, but last weekend the Japanese booths at the LIC Flea jumped from just a couple to nearly fteen. Demonstrating everything from the art of oral arranging to Japanese calligraphy, the additional vendors were brought in by Kazuko Nagao and Hideki Kato—the owners of Oconomi—the stand that has been sautéing delicious cabbage cakes mixed with ingredients like mozzarella, pork, and mixed veggies. What eventually became the Japanese Festival at the LIC Flea started o as Oconomi simply wandering if their friends visiting from Japan could be featured performers over the course of the weekend. When Josh Schneps scratched beneath the surface a little deeper, it turns out that there was a whole lot more to be discovered.
