FOOD 22 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2013 MAR’S If there is one thing that Astoria simply cannot get too much of, it is excellent seafood, fresh from the ocean. And we don’t mean little pieces of crabmeat, tiny shrimp with cocktail sauce, or fried clam strips. We mean buttery lumps of fresh steamed lobster slathered in a homemade hollandaise, pint glasses of jumbo prawns, oysters so smooth you have swallowed them before you know what’s happened to you, and mussels steamed with shallots and Pernod with a touch of cream adding a velvety finish fit for Neptune. We mean the kind of seafood they have been serving up at Mar’s for weekend brunch. If you have been to Astoria’s hottest new seafood shack, then you know what we are talking about. The owners of Sparrow Tavern were met with such success, they decided to open a second location, showcasing their abilities as fishermen. Located around the corner from Kaufman Astoria studios, the place may seem just a bit off the beaten path. But sitting on the porch when the weather is nice, or indoors away from the crazy shuffle that can sometimes be Ditmars, Broadway, and 30th Avenue, the peace and quiet is well worth being a block off the beaten path.
