FREESummer Events 8 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2014 explore your boro In the month that we celebrate our freedom as a nation, we figured it would be a great idea to celebrate many of the opportunities in our neighborhood that are also free. Check out this list of ideas that won’t cost you a cent, but could definitely make your life a little bit richer.  The Museum of the Moving Image (36-01 35th Avenue) offers free admission on Fridays from 4 – 8 p.m. It is the country’s only museum dedicated to the art, history, technique, and technology of the moving image in all its forms.  First Fridays of each month are free at the Noguchi Museum (9 - 01 33rd Rd.) One of the present special exhibits features 65-five sculptures, works on paper, and design objects—many that have never been on view in the Museum before—and explores how the simplicity of form in Noguchi’s work simultaneously links it to both the ancient past and the distant future.  Visit Socrates Sculpture Park to catch a summer film on Wednesdays, try yoga on Saturdays or tai chi on Sundays, explore the Saturday Farmers Market, or take part in new free sunset paddling on July 10, you can enjoy a recital from the Metropolitan Opera, or witness Shakespeare in the Park early in August. The park is located at the end of Broadway at 32-01 Vernon Blvd. www.SocratesSculpturePark.org  Take a dip and enjoy swimming in Astoria Park from now through September 1st. The hours are daily from 11 to 3 p.m., and then again from 4 to 7 p.m.  If you wish to participate in early bird or night owl adult lap swimming, you can register at www.nycgovparks.org/reg/lap-swim. Be sure to bring swimming trunks with a liner, a combination lock, and a white t-shirt if you wish to wear something in the pool. Leave any electronics at home.  Visit one of the free beaches in Queens, at Rockaway, Jacob Riis, Fort Tilden, and Breezy Point Tip.  Explore! Simply hop off your usual train or bus just one stop early, and wander the restaurants, parks, stores, and architecture of your neighborhood. With a borough that changes as rapidly as ours, you just might be surprised by what you discover.  Visit one of the flea markets. The Astoria Flea Market (35-23 35th Ave.) has been extended through Labor Day on Sundays, and LIC (5-25 46th Ave.) on Saturdays is the place to be. While there is plenty of food, art, and fashion to purchase, a stroll just to window shop and socialize between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. won’t cost you a dime.
