22 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2014 FOOD & DRINK POP BAR Pops Up The space located at 12-21 Astoria Boulevard has been seeking a permanent identity over the course of the past few months, as Astorians have seen it pass from Hell Gate Social, to Hell Gate Tiki, and now a third manifestation within about a year’s time. If last night’s preview was any indication, it seems to us like the space has finally found its perfect fit under the ownership of Jeremy Osslund. The new concept, POP BAR, is like stepping into a 5 Pointz painting, with a whimsical cocktail list and playful menu of bar bites. Surrounded by graffiti caricatures and Jap-anime courtesy of two former 5 Pointz artists, guests choose bar from a list that contains a New York Sour (Knob Creek with fresh lemon, a splash of simple syrup, and a floater of red wine) and a White Negroni (Brooklyn gin, lillet, white vermouth, and grapefruit zest). Nibbles range from sriracha-kissed ground duck sloppy joes to cold sesame noodles tossed in crushed peanuts and a creamy peanut sauce. And just beyond the vibrantly painted interior, the backyard reveals a spacious seating area surrounded by stacked white-washed crates and neon patio furniture, which will become a viewing area for '90s sitcoms and a variety of movies throughout the summer,. There openingnight guests enjoyed episodes of the Astoria-filmed Netflix hit series, "Orange is the New Black."
