Al Fresco at M. Wells Steakhouse JULY 2014 | BOROMAG.COM | 23 Last week Hugue Dufour and Sarah Obraitis entertained an intimate opening of the space outside their famous hidden steakhouse. As cab drivers dropped off guests, you could hear them exclaiming, “but this is an auto body shop, not a restaurant…” Meanwhile those arriving by foot double-glanced at their phones to check the address for the eleventh time. Indeed the space remains disguised from the street, save for a few decorative lights visible over the wooden fence. But step beyond the sidewalk and you will quickly pass through into the Narnia of this Quebecois chef and his effervescent wife. Dine in the open air next to an earthen grill where the chef cooks up smoked bites to order, ranging from lush bowls of toasted radishes, cauliflower, and assorted squash with aioli for dunking, to tomato and cheese tartines, crab-caked wedges of cornbread, and whole lobster tails while sipping on smart blends of Pastis and plump blueberries. Whether you come for a nosh before your steak and any one of the brilliantly creative sides, or simply step outside following dinner for a relaxed digestif, this secluded courtyard is one of the neighborhood’s most relaxing outdoor oases.
