TRASH Walking through Caroline Mullen’s
33rd Street apartment felt
like scrolling through an impeccably
curated Pinterest board.
The savvy writer shares her
spacious apartment with two
roommates, Rachel and Mary,
and for this particular weekend, a friend’s
cuddly pug Nelson. Mullen comes from a
do-it-yourself family and took the lead on

decorating the place to perfection – from
the copper accents in the kitchen to the refurbished
shelves in her bedroom.
Needless to say, I quickly developed major
home-envy.
Mullen, who works as an editorial assistant
at Family Circle magazine, moved to
Astoria last year and fell in love with the
people (and the vibrant food scene).
And the girls lucked out. The three-bedroom,
ground-floor apartment has a spacious
kitchen, a mudroom and entryway,
and even a cozy nook serving as their living
room.
Mullen has always had a passion for home
décor and design — which is one of her focuses
at work — so her roommates had no
trouble letting her do her thing.
“My roommates are a lot more laid-back
and chill about their living space than I am,”
she said. “They'll tell you, ‘Caroline decorated
it and we just live here,’ because I can’t
help myself. I am a complete bulldozer. I
decorated like the moment we came in.”
Thankfully they were in capable hands;
Mullen has a great eye. She says she’ll gravitate
toward certain colors, usually pinks, yellows,
greens and blues, then run from there.
Often she’ll find a statement piece or painting
and base everything around that item,
making for a subtle, uniform look without
being overly “matchy-matchy.”
