44 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2015 THE ARTS Queens Theatre recently announced that Con Edison is providing a generous matching grant to the theater to support public programming. Now, through June 30, 2015, every donation to Queens Theatre will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to a combined $50,000. The campaign, if successful, will bring a total of $100,000 to Queens Theatre in the next few weeks. All funds raised will go to support the Queens Theatre’s ongoing mission of presenting world-class performing arts and educational opportunities in Queens. Donors are encouraged to share about the campaign using the hashtag #qtchallenge. “Queens Theatre is so grateful to our partners at Con Edison for making this matching grant and ensuring that great performing arts continue to be accessible to all in the borough,” said Taryn Sacramone, managing director of Queens Theatre. “I encourage all who love the arts and love Queens to join the campaign and make a pledge today.” “Queens Theatre is one of our city’s hidden gems,” said Frances A. Resheske, senior vice president of Public Affairs at Con Edison. “We are a longtime supporter of the theater and hope this new fundraising effort will lead New Yorkers to discover what a vibrant institution they have right in their backyard. This effort will help Queens Theatre continue to showcase high-caliber performers and foster a love of arts and culture for future generations.” Each year, Queens Theatre presents dozens of world-class performances in its home theater within Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Highlights from the 2014/2015 season include The World’s Fair Play Festival, which was named a New York Times Critic’s Pick and sold out; the return of the Annual Latino Cultural Festival; a robust dance season of dance performances, including both established and emerging companies such as Ballet Hispanico, Martha Graham Dance Company, Dance Entropy and Bessie Award-winning Jessica Lang Dance; and the world premiere of the musical “The Queens Bees” by Rob Urbinati, a work inspired by the borough. In addition, the Queens Theatre’s education department reached 2,400 students this season through free student matinees, afterschool playmaking programs and the new Queens Theatre English Language Learners program. Since the announcement of the #qtchallenge campaign, the Queens community has come together to help the theater reach its goal. Queens Theatre’s supporters get to redecorate the theater through a campaign called “Leave Your Mark.” For a donation of $10 or more, theatergoers get to sign or draw on colorful cards that are put in display in the theater’s lobby. On May 21, LIC Landing by COFFEED announced that every Thursday of June, 50 percent of all proceeds during Happy Hour (4 to 7 p.m.), will benefit Queens Theatre.
