Customs Border Protection
and DHS warn of Fake,
Conterfeit goods at prices
"too good to be true"
AIRPORT VOICE, DECEMBER 2021 23
Homeland Security Investigations
(HSI) and U.S. Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) held their annual
Counterfeit products presentation.
JFK Port Director along with displayed
a ling table filled with all kids of
fake merchandise, mostly from China
and overseas to dupe Americans into
spending hard-earned money for fake
goods. Shown were hundreds of different
products that look just like the
real thing. Unfortunately they are not.
Instead they are good looking knockoffs
that temp the buyer into a promise
of real goods at a ridiculously low
prices/ As Port Director likes to say,
“If the price is to good to be true, it
is probable fake, or stolen.” In either
case, the consumer stands to los since
there are often defective electronics,
mis-manufactured clothing and fake
jeweled goods. The nation stands to
lose also because, according to the
CBP, much of the money derived form
these overseas counterfeit goods go
to terrorist organizations through this
intellectual property thievery. Over the
years these criminals have found that
selling these goods will bring extraordinary
profits to their coffers allowing
them to buy the arms and pay mercenaries
that will create havoc here and
the rest of the world.
Every year, CBP seizes a wide
variety of counterfeit products from
all over the world. In FY 2020, CBP
seized over 26,000 shipments of
counterfeit goods that violated IPR
worth over $1.3 billion had the goods
been genuine.
