Air Cargo Assn. virtual meeting
Covid -19 impact discussed
The JFK Air Cargo Association
reconvened virtually after
months of quiet due to the
enormous impact of Covid-19.
Members have been busy surviving
the loss of business and
uncertainty
of the economy. But, now,
after seven months, people
and organizations are beginning
to get together through
the power of the internet and
reestablish contact and interact
with each other. The
JFKACA held
it’s first of continuing virtual
meeting with a discussion
of the state of air cargo
during the Covid crisis with
guest speaker Thomas Rohrmeier
of Lufthansa.
It was a well attended meeting
with air cargo companies
who were interested to earn
about the Covid vaccine status
and distribution.
Withe the increasing talk
about a vaccine or vaccines
approval with in the next few
weeks, the conversations a
and plans of vaccine transportation
AIRPORT V 16 OICE, NOVEMBER 2020
are already in progress.
Manufacturers, distributors,
transportation and government
are formulating their
plans for this supply chain.
The government’s Warp
Speed promises distribution
through out military channels,
but this is not enough for
the last mile to local vaccine
facilities creating opportunities
for the air cargo and related
companies. In the case of
Pfizer, they have chosen not to
take advantage of the government
transportation but have
chosen a private company.
Initially the assumptions
were that most of the vaccine
would be produced overseas
and then transported back to
the U.S.
However, recent comments
suggest that there will be will
a large number of doses to be
moved domestically as Pfizer
has just announced a 90% effectiveness
in the third stage
of trials and will be seeking
government approval and begin
to ship these products to
the first round of essential
workers nationwide.
Rohrmeier gave am excellent
overall presentation
on a wide range of air cargo
subjects but a lot was spoken
about the impact of the pandemic
on the industry.
Some of the presentation
take-aways included:
-Working safely in a COVID
environment is possible.
He suggested to look into thermal
cameras at the entrances
of buildings as one measure
amongst the well known ones
such as masks, distancing etc.
-According to a Seabury
study, capacity on the US-Asia
trade lane is roughly on precrisis
level. Capacity on the
North Atlantic tradelane still
about 40% down. That is just
about sufficient east bound
to Europe, but still much less
west bound due to imbalance
of traffic flows.
-The “new normal” will be
marked by smaller airlines
overall. Most major carriers
seem to anticipate about 1/3
downsizing going forward,
just looking at published job
cuts. This is driven by business
travel being replaced by
online meetings to a degree,
people being scared to travel
for quite some time and people
not being able to afford
to travel due to the economic
crisis that results from the
health crisis.
-COVID vaccine will be
a challenge to distribute,
but it will be a manageable
challenge. I don’t believe
we’ll need 8000 freighters as
IATA says if we make some
modifications to our transport
settings. Freighter carriers
need to be in the lead
here due to dry ice limitations
-It appears a number of
vaccines will be needed to be
shipped at very low temperatures.
This sill add another
level of complexity due to the
requirement of specialized
cooler containers as well as
the availability of specialized
trucks to ship and store temporarily.
The next meeting is November
19, with Delta’s Andy
Kirschner as guest speaker.
