JFK Redevelopment Advisory Council
Quarterly meeting outlines opportunities
BY JEFF YAPALATER
The quarterly meeting of
the JFK Community Advisory
Council was held virtually,
moderated by Dr. Stacie
Grant and lead by Port project
women Selvena Brooks-Powers
and Nantasha Williams.
Brooks-Powers began by
sharing that the Port Authority
is Port committed to
the JFK Redevelopment with
capacity building and long
range contracting initiatives
but the actual construction is
on a hold right now die to the
pandemic.
Port is Evaluating this impact
and working with terminal
developers to find a way to
advance the major terminal
projects that have been outlined
previously.
She said that while exact
modifications might be made,
there are regular daily and
weekly hours of consultation
with the Port, CAO, ASDO,
terminal developers and companies
that are involved in the
redevelopment.
The website, www.anewjfk.
com is the best resource
for updates, meeting notices
and ways to contact developers
for each terminal/
Two projects are in some
form of progress; The Terminal
One project has a revised
time line, but contractor but
certain procurements are under
way to select a general contractor
and the American Airlines
is in active construction.
American Airlines (AA)
was the featured company at
this council meeting.
AA’s compliance firm
Penda Aiken spoke extensively
about inclusion, MBE,
MWBE , small and local business
opportunities.
The American project
is $344 million in renovation,
and construction of new
gates, enlarged buildings, new
lounge, new baggage area, and
renovations. According to AA,
Holt is a major partner having
significant minority opportunities
either directly or in
joint efforts with larger firms.
The project began 2019 and
expected to be completed in
2022 when British Airways
moves in as a co-tenant.
To date the entire project
has 35% MBE to date with
more to come according to AA.
AA feels they need to be
aggressive about outreach to
identify firms for this project.
The know there are barriers
to entry because of lack of
experience, lack of certification,
;lack of capital and lack
of awareness.
American is reaching out
to the community in events,
through sessions with the
Port offices, and through local
elected officials and community
leaders to bring the community
these opportunities
with this Advisory Council
being one way that information
is provided and shared.

EWR, JFK, LGA workers recognized
The Port Authority held its
quarterly rounds of the We Soar
awards recognition program.
This program is a recognition
for excellence of service by all
airport workers and those excelling
are given special recognition
and cash awards.
The port encourages all
workers, passengers and stakeholders
to nominate individuals
that go above and beyond their
job description in assisting travelers.
In appreciative ways.
Said EWR General Manager
James Gill , who speaks
for the common goal that all
airport General Managers
share, told attendees
“ Our mission is to be a
world class airport. These
times are more challenging
as we emerge from the pandemic.
Our customer service
is more important than ever.
We need to create a common
speaking language and understand
what We Soar principals
mean: welcoming, exceeding,
approachable, and respect. It
takes a lot of good hard work
that we all appreciate.” He
was referring to the various
ways that airport workers can
make the passenger feel safer
and more comfortable when
