New KLM Cargo head. Adriaan
den Heijer will take the twin roles of
executive vice president of Air France-
KLM Cargo and managing director of
Martinair as current President Marcel
De Nooijer will move on to the chief
executive role at Transavia. Since
1995, den Heijer has held various positions
at KLM, Air France-KLM and
KLM Cargo. His most recent role was
senior vice president pricing and revenue
at Air France-KLM, which he
started in 2016. In the role he was responsible
for the development and implementation
of the pricing and revenue
management strategies for the Air
France-KLM Group.
IATA has launched an initiative
to reduce audit complexity and duplication
for cargo handling facilities, in
the same way that its CEIV progam
has for specialist cargo.
It is estimated 360,000 days per year
are wasted on redundant cargo handling
audits. A new Smart Facility
Operational Capacity Audit Certification
(SFOC Audit Certification) program
aims to reduce redundant efforts
across the industry by 50% through
removing the need to validate generic
cargo operation procedures. The second
part of the initiative is the Audit
Reduction Commitment (ARC) – an
industry pledge to reduce audits. Airlines
participating in the SFOC programme
will undertake a gap analysis
to determine which audit standards
will not need to be assessed for SFOC
certified facilities.
Lithium concerns. Aviation authorities
have announced they are amplifying
their efforts to ensure the safe
air transport of lithium batteries, nine
years after a fatal crash in Dubai. Currently
air cargo is scanned for items
that pose a risk to security such as explosives,
but not safety such as lithium
batteries.
The International Air Transport
Association (IATAL), in partnership
with the Global Shippers
Forum (GSF), the International Federation
of Freight Forwarders Associations
(FIATA) and the International
Air Cargo Association (TIACA), are
also renewing calls for governments to
crack down on manufacturers of counterfeit
batteries and of mis-labeled and
non-compliant shipments introduced
into the supply chain, by issuing and
enforcing criminal sanctions on those
responsible.
