32 THE COURIER SUN • HOLIDAY • DECEMBER 12, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com s holiday guide Simple decorating tips BY RHONA SILVER 1. What simple thing can I use to make my home look festive for the holidays with old holiday ornaments? Most people have old holiday tree ornaments. We can use the old ones around the house to make the holidays bright. Weather they are Christmas trees or bows they can all work beautifully together to make your house festive. Attach these ornaments to bright gold or silver ribbons. If you have a staircase you can attach the ribbons in between th e banisters. 2. How else can I accent my living room and dining room with these extra ornaments? Rhona Silver is currently the Founding Director of CaterBid. com. She is a visionary entrepreneur and a prominent fi gure for 40 years in the catering business. facebook.com/caterbid twitter.com/#!/CaterBid youtube.com/user/caterbid linkedin.com/company/caterbid Purchase wide ribbon about inches wide. Tie it around the dining room chair in a bow like fashion. In the knot of the bow and sash tie ornaments onto the back of the chair to make the chair festive. 3. What can I do for the top of the table? Attach the ribbon to the chandelier over the dining room table and allow the ornaments to hang down like crystals. Then in a glass bowl arrange the extra ornaments and use this as a centerpiece. If you have extra ribbon you can make bows to put in between the ornaments to give it more color. This is a fun, inexpensive way to make your home all set for the holidays. ‘North Pole’ comes again to Neponsit Beach BY MAGGIE HAYES mhayes@queenscourier.com The North Pole came to Neponsit Beach as the community celebrated Christmas in style. Lights glowed on Joe Mure’s Neponsit Avenue home, where he hosted his annual “Little North Pole” event to benefi t juvenile diabetes. A Christmas display surrounded the house and close to 5,000 people came to see the show, Mure said, including local elected offi cials, community leaders and thousands of borough residents. The roughly $200,000 that the event raised will go directly to juvenile diabetes research. Local joints such as Vetro, Lenny’s Clam Bar and Lucy’s Sausage & Peppers donated heaps of food and local performers sang and danced through the night. “We put smiles on every single face that was out there,” Mure said. “We put on a show that was both appropriate and great for both kids and adults.” Then, Santa Claus came to town, riding a sled perched on a fl atbed. Several emergency vehicles followed him with their sirens blaring and lights swirling. “If you sat out there, you watched Santa Claus show up with the sirens and lights from the sky, you would have a memory of Christmas that will last you a lifetime,” Mure said. The Little North Pole, a tradition held for nearly two decades, was put on hold last year after Sandy. But now, Mure said they are back, “stronger and brighter than ever.” “We live in the heart of Rockaway. A year ago, we had nothing,” he said. “I think the kick-off of the Little North Pole was some sort of proof that we’re alive, we’re back.” PHOTO BY VITO CATALANO 2014 Celebrate at New Year’s 2014 at COMMIT TO BE FIT ONE-ON-ONE PERSONAL TRAINING GROUP CLASSES AVAILABLE ALL AGES.
