24 THE COURIER SUN • DECEMBER 12, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com REMEMBERING MANDIBA Queens leaders refl ect on a world-changing life BY CRISTABELLE TUMOLA ctumola@queenscourier.com The death of former South African President and Nobel Prize Peace winner Nelson Mandela at age 95 last week resonated around the world as people refl ected on his legacy. His impact was felt by local leaders in Queens, some of whom met the infl uential leader. Congressmember Gregory Meeks traveled to South Africa to attend Mandela’s memorial, which has held on Tuesday, December 10 at Johannesburg’s FNB stadium. “I will always cherish having met Nelson Mandela on several occasions — especially the laughter, stories, and insight he shared with me and other members of a congressional delegation during a wonderful lunch at his home,” said Meeks. Meeks said Mandela’s “legacy as a visionary, intellectual, liberation leader and statesman will illuminate the path of progress as much as his smile lit up our hearts, as much as his will to continue the struggle inspired his nation and the world.” Reverend Floyd Flake, a former U.S. congressmember and senior pastor at the Greater Allen A. M. E. Cathedral of New York in Jamaica, who also had the opportunity to meet Mandela, said “even in his jail time he stayed a force.” “I think his legacy will be an empowering legacy and the legacy of a person who could have given up but did not” he said. “The way his life has gone is of such a nature, people of such different persuasions, of all races, of all classes have come to love what he represents.” Photo courtesy of Congressmember Gregory Meeks Congressmember Gregory Meeks with Nelson Mandela, who passed away at age 95 on December 5. “I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH HAVING MET NELSON MANDELA ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS” CONGRESSMEMBER GREGORY MEEKS ARE YOU THE ONE? This was the first time that we had rented out the house since purchasing it two years earlier. During that winter, our personal property was destroyed by a fire. For personal property, our policy contains two amounts of coverage: a smaller one when used for business purposes and a larger one when not so used. The policy defines ‘business’ as including the rental of property to others – except for the“ occasional” rental for residential purposes of a part of the house that we normally occupy. Our insurer says that this kind of rental was more than ‘occasional’: that it will pay only the smaller coverage, for personal property used for business purposes. A: An insurer seeking to invoke a policy exclusion must establish that the exclusion is stated in clear and unmistakable language, is subject to no other reasonable interpretation, and applies in your particular case. In determining whether a policy provision is ambiguous, the focus is on the reasonable expectations of the average insured upon reading the policy. Particularly where exclusionary language is at issue, any ambiguity in the policy is resolved in favor of you. Your attorney will argue that a one-time rental of a summer home for a five-month period, with no definite plans to continue to rent the home (until the next year) but with every intent to return to use the home exclusively yourselves, fits comfortably within the ‘occasional’ rental exception.
