8 The Courier sun • NOVEMBER 3, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com South Queens will get its say on Election Day BY ROBERT POZARYCKI rpozarycki@qns.com/@robbpoz Everyone’s talking about the presidential race as Election Day nears, but south Queens voters will have to also decide this Tuesday, Nov. 8, who they want to represent them on Capitol Hill and in the state Legislature. All seats in the House of Representatives, the state Assembly and the state Senate are up for grabs this Tuesday; New Yorkers will also elect a U.S. senator, as incumbent Democratic Senator Charles Schumer is being challenged by Republican nominee Wendy Long. Polls will be open on Nov. 8 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; for more information on where to vote, visit www.voting.nyc. Here’s a rundown of the legislative contests in the Sun’s coverage area: CONGRESS Fifth Congressional District: Congressman Gregory Meeks, a Democrat with 17 years of Jeffries, will square off against Conservative nominee experience on Capitol Hill, is being challenged by Republican Michael O’Reilly, a former airline pilot, for the right to represent much of southeast Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula. Seventh Congressional District: Woodhaven is part of the Seventh District that extends into Brooklyn and Manhattan. Democratic Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, who has held the seat since 1992, is facing Republican nominee Allan E. Romaguera, a banker and businessman from Brooklyn. Eighth Congressional District: Ozone Park and Howard Beach are included in the Eighth District that also covers central Brooklyn. The Democratic incumbent, Congressman Hakeem Daniel J. Cavanagh of Brooklyn. STATE SENATE 10th Senatorial District: State Senator James Sanders, the Democratic incumbent, is in a rematch with Adrienne Adams, chairperson of Community Board 12, who is running on the Women’s Equality ballot line. Sanders defeated Adams in September’s Democratic primary. The 10th District covers much of southeast Queens and the eastern Rockaway Peninsula. 14th Senatorial District: Democratic State Senator Leroy Comrie is seeking re-election against Republican challenger Jarret N. Freeman of Cambria Heights. The 14th District includes much of Jamaica, St. Albans, Cambria Heights and Laurelton. 15th Senatorial District: State Senator Joe Addabbo, the Democratic incumbent, is seeking a fifth term in office against Republican challenger Michael Conigliaro of Rego Park. Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Howard Beach, Broad Channel and the western Rockaways are all neighborhoods within the 15th District. ASSEMBLY 23rd Assembly District: Democratic District Leader Stacey Pheffer-Amato and Republican teacher Alan N. Zwirn are battling to succeed the outgoing Democratic Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder for the right to represent areas of Ozone Park, Howard Beach, Broad Channel and the Rockaways in the state Assembly. 33rd Assembly District: In a contest to fill the Assembly seat previously held by the late Assemblywoman Barbara Clark, Democratic community advocate Clyde Vanel of Cambria Heights is facing Republican challenger Goldy- Francois Wellington of Queens Village. The district includes part of St. Albans, Laurelton and Queens Village. 38th Assembly District: Democratic Assemblyman Mike Miller is seeking his fourth full term in office against Republican Joseph Maldonado, a retired Sanitation Department supervisor from Ozone Park. The 38th District includes Woodhaven and much of Ozone Park and Richmond Hill. Three southern Queens Assembly members are running unopposed: Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman of the 29th District, Assemblywoman Michele Titus of the 31st District and Assemblywoman Vivian Cook of the 32nd District.
