And I got a chance to enjoy my stepson Jon and his wife Hillary with a lunch before the wedding! Now you might wonder where Noho is, as I did. It’s a real estate term for the neighborhood north of Houston Street. I’m an NYU graduate so that area was my stomping grounds. But it has grown to encompass a larger area that has been gentrified and reinvented. But let me not get ahead of myself. My beloved stepson Jon lives in Sarasota, Florida, and although we text each other and speak on the phone, nothing beats seeing him and his beautiful wife, Hillary, in person. Since Jon’s favorite food is Chinese cuisine, which he doesn’t have options for in his town, he researched a great place for us to meet and found Cafe China, which earned a Michelin star! The Szechuan cuisine – with the spicy dishes labeled with one to four red chili peppers, based on how hot they were – was a treat for the eye and palate. We arrived at 1:30 p.m. and when we left at 3:30, there were no tables available and this is the slow time! With vegetarian and gluten-free choices and no MSG in the food, the chef has created a diverse menu. With more than half the customers in the restaurant being Chinese, we knew the food was authentic! We sampled wonton soup, dim sum, noodles and entrees including a whole fish and unique fried shrimp in a spicy sauce with peanuts – mouthwatering. Each portion was big enough to share. It’s at 13 East 37th St. and from there, I went to their hotel to get ready for the wedding downtown. The Waze app said it was two miles away but it took 45 minutes to go that distance. That’s Manhattan. Judith Yunis was my late husband Stu’s first grandchild and destined to be the only girl surrounded by seven boys until Jillian, now 5 years old, was born to Jon. Living in Astoria, she works at YAI as a social worker helping people with disabilities. After her graduation from Rice University, where her father Harvey is a professor of classics, she came to New York to get her master’s degree. We were happy to have her close to the Manhattan Broner/Yunis clan. She met Nick, who is from West Virginia, in Manhattan and they quickly became a loving couple embraced by all of us. He has a twinkle in his eye and works in tech at Bloomberg but also makes cottage craft beer “business” creations in his bathtub! For their wedding, they chose an intimate space at Lafayette, a highly acclaimed café that chef Andrew Carmellini has made into a hugely popular eatery in Noho. Down a flight of stairs was a magical space with candlelit tables, brick walls filled with wine bottle niches, and chairs set for the wedding ceremony that then soon evolved into a space for a delicious dinner and dancing. The couple’s joy, happiness and great love spread through the room and I was delighted to have my children there and a chance to catch up with Stu’s children and grandchildren – all special in their own ways. She is now recovering from two surgeries at Winthrop University Hospital. My best wishes go out to her and her loved ones.
