Amid all the heated and downright ugly rhetoric that the 2016 presidential campaign has brought to bear, it may be easy for a cynic to dismiss it all as meaningless talk among partisans. The words exchanged on the campaign trail have no meaning in the real world. Don’t tell that to Michael Luo, an Asian-American from the Upper West Side whose open letter in The New York Times this weekend shocked readers. Luo recalled that recently, a woman who encountered him on the street told him to “go back to China.” Where is our tolerance? The incident came a week after a show on Fox News Channel featured a segment in which a commentator went to Chinatown and basically mocked people of Asian descent, using broken English and asking blatantly ignorant questions to interviewees. The commentator, after receiving fl ak for this ignorant display, took to Twitter and offered “regret if anyone found offense.” (That, by the way, doesn’t constitute an apology; the commentator wasn’t sorry for his actions, he was sorry people took offense by them.) Where is our tolerance? We can’t help but conclude, however, that the incident involving Mr. Luo, as well as the Fox News segment, are byproducts of this toxic presidential campaign. We can’t help but feel this offensive fi re has been fueled by a certain candidate who has called for a ban on Muslims into the country, wants to build a wall on our border with Mexico, is wholly misinformed about the African-American community and has a history of treating women — including his opponent in the presidential race — like objects to be used and abused. The horrifying irony is that this man is the product of Queens, the borough that has become the most diverse place on Earth. Quite obviously, he does not represent this borough at all. His words and actions give comfort to ignorant people who now lash out at anyone different from them. Everyone should feel ashamed by the words and actions of Donald Trump. Where is our tolerance? There is no room for hate in Queens, nor is there room for hate in the rest of the city, state and country. Queens has its share of challenges, and you can name plenty of them — rising expenses, homelessness, overcrowded schools, transportation deserts, etc. — but the fact that this borough is home to people from more than half the nations on Earth is something to be celebrated, not ridiculed or belittled. Tolerance must be our guide as a society. People of every walk of life must be treated with the respect they deserve. Queens and the American people must stand up for their fellow neighbors and denounce bigotry in all its forms.
