16 THE COURIER SUN • OCTOBER 13, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com Free coding boot camp at Queens College in Flushing for CUNY grads this November BY ANGELA MATUA amatua@qns.com @AngelaMatua CUNY graduates who are seeking a career in tech can learn the skills they need through a new 12-week coding boot camp that will be offered at Queens College. The school is partnering with Revature, a technology talent development company, to teach the “latest enterprise level, next-generation and niche technology skills” to more than 2,000 students in the next fi ve years. Queens College recently launched Tech Incubator, a startup incubator for tech freelancers, professional developers and entrepreneurs. It also launched the Tech Talent Pipeline Residency, which connects computer science majors with employers looking to hire students for shortterm professional experiences. More undergraduates are majoring in computer science at Queens College than any other school in the New York area, according to a press release. “CUNY is committed to supporting equal access to opportunity for all, regardless of background, means, race and gender,” said Ann Kirschner, special advisor to the chancellor for strategic partnerships at CUNY. “In today’s world, opportunity means tech. Coding boot camps are helping to narrow the enormous demand for technology professionals in New York and across the country—but are prohibitively expensive and out of reach for many students.” Students who complete the boot camp are hired by Revature and will receive industry certifi cation. All current students and alumni will also have access to RevaturePro, a free online course training program for non-technical and advanced students who want to learn Java, Microsoft.NET and other front-end development languages. They will also receive support from industry mentors. The fi rst 12-week boot camp will start on Nov. 14 at Queens College and another one is planned for CUNY’s School of Professional Studies Manhattan campus in January 2017. Revature is now accepting applications from CUNY graduates for both on-campus boot camps. The application deadline for the fi rst Queens College boot camp is Nov. 7.
