Get Ready Get Wet: Build comfort and confidence in preparation for actual swim instruction. The
class introduces new swimmers to the water. Children as young as 3 years old can participate if an adult
family member joins them in the water. (30 Minutes)
Learn to Swim: Learn proper breathing and streamlining techniques, freestyle and backstroke. Learn
to swim advanced class teaches freestyle and backstroke. (1 Hour)
Stroke Enhancement Program: Learn skills in preparation for joining a competitive team. For
swimmers who have good freestyle and backstroke but want to learn breaststroke, butterfly, starts and
turns. (1.5-2 Hours)
Competitive Program: Improve speed and stamina across all events. For swimmers who are already on
a swim team but needs to refine their technique. The class is appropriate for triathletes, competitive
swimmers, and water sport clinic participants. (2 Hours)
Adaptive Program: Drowning is the leading cause of death for children with autism. But it doesn’t
have to be. Swim Strong provides water safety education and teaches the swimming skills that will help
your child be safe, effective and confident in the water. Reach out through the contact us tab to discuss
your child’s specific need.
Planning for end of
life sooner rather than later
Much like life’s everyday
challenges and even joys, death
is a certainty that we will all
face. Still, there is no denying
that many people find it easier
to avoid the subject of end of life
planning than to address it headon.
The truth is, it is better for
older adults and their loved ones
to confront this topic and start
making arrangements sooner
rather than later.
To relieve that stress of
preparing for a time when you
won’t be around, make a list of
everything you want to tackle,
then narrow it down to the three
most important items. Planning
will feel more manageable when
you start with those three items.
For most people, wills, finances
and health decisions top their list.
You may want to create a will
to spell out who will inherit your
assets, potentially eliminating
painful disagreements among
your loved ones. It is also a good
DONNA CORRADO,

Department for the Aging
idea to check that your investment
accounts accurately name your
beneficiaries, especially for long-
forgotten accounts.
If you are worried about
funding future needs, pay off
outstanding debts that will
continue to grow as you age and
research the types of debt that
may burden your heirs. In most
cases, heirs are only responsible
for debts they have co-signed
and for jointly held accounts like
credit cards. To handle financial
and property decisions, consider
appointing a power of attorney.
In the event that you are unable
to make medical decisions for
yourself, previously prepared
advance directives will ensure
that your wishes are carried
out. Advance directives include
selecting someone you can trust
to make clear-headed decisions
as your health care proxy; that
person should protect your
personal dignity, patient rights
and medical preferences. In New
York, health care proxies can even
be appointed for people who are
already living with Alzheimer’s
disease. A living will is another
important directive that can
guide your care.
For additional guidance on end
of life planning, Five Wishes is a
tool that helps people document
everything from quality of life to
comfort to medical treatment.
The document is available
in 29 languages online at
FiveWishes.org and in Braille.
No one should have to
approach end of life planning
alone. I encourage you to speak
with your relatives, close friends,
doctors and an attorney about
your concerns and wishes.
Though these are difficult
conversations to have, they
shouldn’t be avoided.
