Jamaica woman charged with causing her
son’s death in their home over a year ago

A Jamaica boy’s mother has been charged
with causing the 5-year-old’s death more
than a year ago.
On July 26, police arrested 31-year-old
Phyllis Reinoso, who now resides on Staten
Island, on charges of manslaughter, assault,
reckless endangerment, acting in a manner
injurious to a child less than 17 years old
and failure to exercise control of a minor.
At 4:17 p.m. on Jan. 22, 2017, police
responded to a 911 call regarding an
unconscious male at a home on 109th
Avenue near Inwood Street. Upon their
arrival, offi cers from the 103rd Precinct
found 5-year-old Michael Guzman unconscious
and unresponsive.
EMS responded to the scene and rushed
Guzman to Jamaica Hospital, where he
was pronounced dead.
Th e medical examiner ruled Guzman’s
death a homicide in December 2017.
Reports indicated that Guzman suff ered
from epileptic seizures and died of acute
phenobarbital intoxication.
According to police, the family has a
history of domestic violence incidents.
Multiple children were living at the residence
where Guzman was found.
State Senator announces fourth annual
school supplies drive in southeast Queens

State Senator Leroy Comrie announced
that he is holding his fourth annual
Community School Supplies Drive.
From now until Aug. 24, the senator’s
offi ce is accepting school supply donations
to his district offi ce, located at 113-
43 Farmers Blvd. in St. Albans.
Th e senator observed that too many children
walk into class without the tools they
need due to parents and guardians not
having the time or resources to fully prepare
them. As a result, he has been committed
to organizing and supporting back
to school events for children every summer
since he was fi rst elected to the state Senate.
“We want to make sure that every child
in southeast Queens shows up to school
on the fi rst day of classes with all that he
or she needs to have a successful school
year,” Senator Comrie said. “Parents and
teachers do all that they can, so I am
always pleased to see the community step
up and show their support for our young
people.”
Th e full list of acceptable supply donations
are as follows:
• Pens, pencils, erasers and whiteout
• Markers, crayons and colored pencils
• Notebooks and notebook paper
• Backpacks and lunchboxes
• Calculators and laptops
• Folders and binders
• Dictionaries and reference books
• Safety scissors, rulers and glue sticks
• Binders, dividers and highlighters
Donations are being accepted to the
senator’s St. Albans offi ce from now until
Aug. 24. For more information on the

Russo, active in
community, dies

A Richmond Hill restaurant will
hold services this week for a family
member who passed away this week.
Paul Russo passed away this week
aft er battling cancer at 33 years old.
He is survived by his parents, George
and Antha, and his siblings George,
Arianna, Nicolette and Giovana.
A real estate broker for MetroNet
Realty, Russo served as the president
of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro
Queens. Russo was also active with
Russo’s on the Bay and Villa Russo,
which are both owned by his family.
Russo’s wake will take place at Villa
Russo, located 101-12 Leff erts Blvd. in
Richmond Hill, on Aug. 1-2 from 4 to
9 p.m. each day. Th e funeral Mass will
take place on Aug. 3 at 10:45 a.m. at St.
Helen’s Church, located at 157-10 83rd
St. in Howard Beach.
