Trump crossed an irreversible line
President Th eodore Roosevelt once said, “To announce that there must be
no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right
or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to
the American public.”
Councilman Eric Ulrich, the lone elected Republican lawmaker representing
Queens, followed that sentiment when he tweeted remarks in the
wake of President Donald Trump’s odious press conference with Russian
President Vladimir Putin following their closed-door July 16 summit in
Helsinki, Finland.
“Th e leader of the Free World basically genufl ected before Putin and got
nothing in return. I am an American before I am a Republican, and today I
am embarrassed to say the very least,” Ulrich wrote. He’s right, it was embarrassing
Trump essentially dismissed the fi ndings of the American law enforcement
and intelligence communities investigating Russia’s meddling in the
2016 elections, and took Putin’s denials at his word. It was a slap in the face
to our entire justice system.
In Queens, the borough where Trump was born and raised, the 45th president
of our country still has plenty of supporters despite his many controversial
decisions.
How can Republicans in Queens, in New York and in the United States still
defend Donald Trump aft er he bowed to Putin?
Th e Twitter response from Ulrich, a fi ne public servant, mirrors the verbal
outrage from many Republican lawmakers across the country. Th ey’ve
wagged their fi ngers before over Trump’s indiscretions — and predictably,
nothing changed.
So what are Republicans going to do this time? Will they do anything to
protect and defend the separation of powers in federal government?
It’s time for Republicans everywhere to distance themselves from Trump,
and unite with Democrats and independents in preserving the norms upon
which our republic has thrived for more than 240 years.
A need for clarity from Ocasio-Cortez
Congressional hopeful Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez owes her likely future
constituents in Queens clarity with regard to her recent remarks about violence
in the Middle East and Israel’s purported “occupation” of Palestine.
In a recent interview on PBS’ “Firing Line,” Ocasio-Cortez said the “occupation
of Palestine is the increasing crisis of humanitarian condition.” Back
in May, aft er 60 Palestinians were killed in violence on the Gaza Strip, she
called the incident a “massacre” and implied that there was no justifi cation
for it.
While civilians were caught up in the violence, it’s widely known that
Hamas terrorists instigated violence in the region with Israeli soldiers, leading
to bloodshed.
While Ocasio-Cortez says she’s concentrating on the humanitarian crisis
in the area, she must not take a myopic approach to the violence in the
Middle East. Terrorism is unacceptable, and Ocasio-Cortez must take a
harder line in condemning Hamas while solidifying support of a two-state
solution to achieve Mideast peace.
Queens residents will accept nothing less.
THE QUEENS
to every American.
