father’s day
Father’s Day games the whole family can enjoy
BY TRESA ERICKSON
You’re planning a little get-together
for all of the fathers in your family on
Father’s Day. You’re cooking up all of
their favorites and inviting everyone. Of
course, there will be plenty of visiting
going on, but you would also like to have
a few games for the kids, dads and any
other guests interested to enjoy together.
Here are some suggestions.
Pin the Tie on Dad
For this game, you will need a large
photo of a dad and some ties and stickpins.
Blow up the photo on a copier if
necessary and hang it on the wall. Th en
blindfold players one at a time and give
them a tie to try to pin on the dad. Th e
player who gets the closest to pinning the
tie on the dad’s neck wins.
Name That Handprint
For this game, you will need some
paper, washable paint, pens and notepads.
As each young guest arrives at the
celebration, give them a sheet of paper
and ask them to make their handprint on
it using the paint and write their name on
the back. Spread the handprints on a table
and have the dads in the room write down
the identity of each on
their notepad. Th e dad
with the most correct
guesses wins.
Scavenger Hunt
For this game, you
will need to hide several
lists of household
items around the
area before the celebration
begins. Divide
players into teams and
appoint a dad to lead
each team. Give each
team a list of items to
hunt down. Th e fi rst
team to fi nd everything
on their list wins.
Shaving Game
For this game, you will need several
cans of whipped cream and craft sticks.
Pair off players, give each two craft sticks
and a can of whipped cream, and instruct
them to shave each other’s faces using
the craft sticks as razors and the whipped
cream as shaving cream. Th e pair who
fi nishes fi rst wins.
Who Said That?
For this game, you will need a notebook
and some pens and notepads. As each
young guest arrives at the celebration,
take them aside and ask them to describe
their dad. Write down what they say and
spread the descriptions on a table. Have
the dads in the room write down the identity
of each author on their notepad. Th e
dad with the most correct guesses wins.
Th ese are just fi ve of the many games
you could off er at your celebration for
dads, kids and any others who want to
play. Keep in mind that you may have
to make some revisions depending upon
the number of dads and kids you have at
the celebration. If you don’t have a lot of
kids, you might have to enlist some adults
to play. You can always beef up the challenges
and write some trivia questions for
adults to answer.

Dads Want Steak
Give your dad the best for Father’s Day
Dads typically love steak, so this Father’s
Day, go ahead and shower him with some
love straight off the grill. You can make
the day even more memorable by sharing
the grilling experience together.
In fact, it may be the perfect chance to
teach your old man a thing or two with
these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive
Chef Grant Hon.
Choose Your Protein
Selecting quality protein is the starting
place for an exceptional grilled meal. For
example, the ribeye is the most well-marbled
steak, meaning it’s super juicy, rich
with beefy fl avor and excellent on the
grill.
Prepare the Grill
Always start with clean grill grates. Heat
your gas grill to high or start your charcoal
10-15 minutes before you grill. Dip
a paper towel in oil using tongs and oil
your grill grates before adding steaks for
a great sear.
Prepare the Meat
Pat steaks dry with a clean paper towel
and season them before they hit the grill.
You can’t go wrong with simple sea salt
and cracked pepper, but creative recipes
like this Dukkah Rub can add a special
twist.
Sear and Crust
Cook steaks directly over your heat
source to get a tasty, crunchy sear on the
outside of the steak. Th is is where the best
fl avor comes from, and it off ers a delicious
contrast to the rich, juicy inside of
the cut.
Control Your Cook
Keep the grill cover closed as much
as possible to maintain a temperature
of around 450 F. Th is helps lock in fl avor
and prevent fl are-ups. Remember
the marbling on a ribeye means more
fat, which melts during cooking. Th is is a
good thing, but you may experience more
dripping or fl are-ups if you’re used to
grilling leaner steaks.
To minimize the need to open the grill
cover, determine the amount of time
you’ll need to reach your desired doneness
then use the 60-40 grilling method.
Grill 60 percent on the fi rst side then 40
percent aft er you turn the steak over for
an even cook.
Let it Rest
A resting time of at least 5 minutes
allows steak juices to redistribute for the
best eating experience. A foil tent can
help regulate temperature during the resting
period.
Garnish and Flavor
Whether you’re grilling vegetables, sauteing
onions or adding a diff erent kind of
sweet or savory topping, just before you
serve is the right time to garnish your steak.
