Samiya Fagun’s work will be on display for a year in the Cannon Tunnel, a heavily traveled corridor in the U.S. Capitol. Hundreds of students from across Meng’s central Queens district entered the nationwide contest, themed “An Artistic Discovery,” which showcases the artwork of contest winners from around the U.S. Fagun and her parents will receive round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines to and from Washington, D.C., and join Meng at the opening ceremonies of the exhibit in June on Capitol Hill. Fagun and other contest winners nationwide will also be eligible for a potential scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Fagun won the district competition for her watercolor drawing “Moments of Life.” She plans to attend the City College of New York this fall and is considering a major in art. “I congratulate Samiya Fagun for winning this year’s art contest and look forward to her winning artwork representing our Congressional district in the nation’s capitol,” Meng said. “I also salute all who entered the competition. Such outstanding artistic talent from our local high school students!” Forty-six teenagers from 13 different high schools participated in the contest. All of the entrants received certificates of Congressional recognition. Meng also awarded runner-up prizes to Ashley No, a student at Bayside’s Benjamin Cardozo High School, whose watercolor piece titled “Tears” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Washington office; Ruotao Ma, a student at Flushing’s Windsor School, whose ink painting “From Below” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Flushing district office; and Alexis Martinez, a student at Fresh Meadows’ St. Francis Preparatory School, whose mixed media artwork “The Subway Scene” will be on display for a year in Meng’s Forest Hills office. Officials and staff members from the Queens Museum helped Meng pick the winners.
