Aside from this, she saw evidence of poverty, as many of her neighbors struggled in their pursuit of the “American Dream.” She always knew that she had an obligation to assist people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in order to possibly lighten their burden. Over the years her community service work has led her to take part in the cleanup effort in the Rockaways after the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, to volunteer at the Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in Queens, and in St. John’s University’s Mobile Soup Kitchen program. Muñoz has even participated in “Midnight Runs,” which work to bring meals and clothes to the homeless in areas of Manhattan, and was once the chair of a committee, which raised over $10,000 dollars for orphans of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Most recently she has been in the process of beginning a start up business called FullSpinNYC, which would use spinning classes to raise money for physically and mentally challenged athletes. Through St. John’s University, she also coordinated a Black/Latino Youth Empowerment conference which more than 250 eighth-graders and high school students attended in order to learn the value of higher education. Personal background: Muñoz is Dominican, Cuban, Italian and Venezuelan. Her fondest memories growing up are of spending time biking through Flushing Meadows Corona Park and visiting the New York Hall of Science. She attended St. Bartholomew’s for elementary school and then St. Francis Preparatory for high school. Upon graduating from Stony Brook University, she attained a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in social work. Profesional background: After working for eight years as a resident director at Old Westbury College, she went on to become a resident director at her alma mater, Stony Brook University. Muñoz was an instructor of English at a middle school in Spain, and since October 2012 has been the assistant director of multicultural affairs at St. John’s University. Motivation: Muñoz’s motivation stems from her love of forming connections with new people. Inspired by her single mother, she appreciates the love and respect she received growing up and wishes to pay that forward both in her professional and volunteer work. Biggest acomplishment: As far as accomplishments go, Muñoz feels that learning how to break down stereotypes and understand people for who they truly are is essential. This compassion for others, relating to the idea that we are all in this life together, is the value that she holds most dear to her heart. Biggest Challenge: What Muñoz laments the most is that she yearns to do more. She wishes that she had the resources and time to assist parents who are working multiple jobs, as well as at-risk youth in their daily lives. This time and resource limit that we all face is something she feels has been one of her greatest obstacles. Favorite memory: Overall Muñoz cherishes every single memory of everyone she has ever worked with in support of a good cause. As far as specific memories and experiences, Muñoz sincerely thanks the elderly woman who showed her much gratitude for bringing joy to her nursing home. Muñoz would also like to thank all the students she works with on a daily basis for motivating her with their kind words of appreciation.
