Hillcrest boys were tops in division hoops

The Hillcrest High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team won the Division Championship this year. Coach Nunez praised seniors Bobby Thomas and Obane Montique, along
with junior Banbou Toure for his exemplary athletic skill and grade point average. The team won 18 out of 22 games total, as well as 13 out of 14 in their division. The Boys
Varsity Team, the Hillcrest Hawks placed as the No. 8 seed in New York City.

for local girls

For the fi rst time
this summer, Gantry
Plaza State Park in
Long Island City will
host “Queens Rules
Girls Program,” a
pick-up basketball
league for girls
during the months of
May and June.
“We’ve seen a huge
interest in girls, specifi
cally underserved.
So I wanted to try
an all-girls program
along with the
regular kids program
that we do,” said
Andrew Williams,
the Gantry Plaza
park manager.
Th e program will
bring together girls
in grades three to
eight for a supervised
game of basketball
from 4 to 5:15 p.m.
every Tuesday and
Friday from May 3 to
June 25 at the park’s
basketball courts on
48th Avenue in Long
Island City.
Th e new basketball
programming
aims to help young
players get the hang
of community pickup
games, under the
guidance of Coach
Andrew Klein.
Th e cost is $60,
which will be donated
back to the park
for future programs
in LIC. It’s not necessary
to be available
for all the sessions.
Players can choose
to come as much as
they want.
Game clocks, basketball
equipment
and drinks will be
provided.
Th e park will also
host a free outdoor
tournament for
adults from 9 a.m. to
noon on June 8 and
for kids from 9 a.m.
to noon on June 9.

Lady Hawks of Hillcrest have solid year on the court

After they made it to the 2nd round of playoff s, the Girls Varsity Basketball team at Hillcrest High School ended their winning season. The Lady Hawks won 9 out of 16
games in their league, and a total of 16 out of 25 games in their 2018 - 2019 season. Assistant Facilities Manager and Coach Ziozis commended her team for their performance
this year. She gave a special shoutout to Captain Hannah Ramos for her leadership skills, along with Sienne Tejera, Claudeline Fleurival and Alicia Gumbs for their
athletic performances this season. “This team is one of the most cohesive teams I have ever coached. The players are unselfi sh on the court and off the court, and they look
out for each other. We are truly a family,” Ziozis said.
