24 The Courier sun • wellness • MARCH 17, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com WELLNESS s Two-thirds of all New York kids had their flu shots The New York State Department of Health (DOH) was honored for the second-straight year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for having high rates of childhood influenza vaccine coverage. During the 2014-15 flu season, 67 percent of New York children (outside of NYC) 6 months to 17 years of age received the flu vaccine, well above the national average of 59 percent. Childhood influenza vaccination coverage rates in other states ranged from 45.3 percent to 78.6 percent. “The fact we are receiving this award for the second time demonstrates our strong commitment to vaccinating the children of New York for influenza,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “For many years, the Department has taken aggressive steps to ensure that New York’s youngest citizens are appropriately protected from the flu, which can be life-saving in the pediatric population.” The state’s high childhood influenza vaccination rates can be attributed to several DOH initiatives including the following: • A $900,000 multimedia campaign that included television, radio, Internet radio, digital and mobile banner ads, sponsored Google searches and social media, and an influenza landing page on the DOH website. http://www. health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/ influenza/seasonal/ • Ongoing updates on influenza vaccine recommendations, vaccine availability and flu activity, which are disseminated to health care providers via email, electronic notification and webinars. • Educational materials on the flu vaccine distributed to schools, day care centers, nursery schools and pre-kindergarten programs throughout the state. In the 2013-14 flu season, which was especially severe, Governor Cuomo issued an Executive Order that allowed pharmacists to administer influenza vaccine to children between the ages of 6 months and 18 years. New York’s use of Executive Orders to help control influenza was recently featured by the National Governor’s Association as a strategy that other states should consider adopting. Influenza typically causes fever, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffed nose, and fatigue. According to the CDC, influenza in children under age 5 often requires medical attention. In children under 2, the flu can cause severe complications such as pneumonia, sinus and ear infections and dehydration. In children with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease, the flu can worsen those diseases. HOWARD BEACH COUPLE JOINS ARNOLD AT FITNESS CONVENTION After receiving honors from “The Governator” last year for their work in physical culture, a Howard Beach couple returned the favor by presenting awards during the 2016 International Chiropractors Association (ICA) convention. Jack and Corinne Wlody received the 2015 ICA Legacy Award from actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in recognition of their contributions toward community service and promoting fitness. This year, they followed Arnold on stage of the ICA convention as featured presenters. The Wlodys also had the opportunity to provide the audience with a presentation on cycling and how their system radically transformed the lives of many. The couple participated in last year’s National Bike Challenge and pedaled a combined 11,131 miles in just 96 days. They also discussed Bike New York, a program promoting biking citywide. “There was no one else I’d rather share the stage with than this remarkably talented and motivational dynamic duo,” said Ken Podziba, Bike New York’s president and CEO. “Whether it’s the recipients of their volunteerism, their clients, or strangers they happen to meet on the street, Team Wlody’s positive spirit, boundless energy, technical expertise and compassion has transformed countless lives while helping people reach their potential. Last weekend the students of the International Chiropractors Association got a taste of the Wlody System — how they can introduce it to their patients and in their own lives — and it was such a pleasure to witness their domino effect in action to these health and fitness practitioners as they provided important information about improving the physical, mental and emotional well-being of those that subscribe to their program.” “Jack, Corinne and Ken both inspired and motivated us all,” said Dr. Jack Barnathan, founder of the event. “Their insights combined with unique strategies for creating personal change left us all wanting to apply them in our lives, and with those we serve. They were an invaluable centerpiece of the program.” Corinne and Jack Wlody lead a successful private fitness design studio, have an international virtual client following and are the authors of a soonto be-released, fun illustrated book on “lifestyle choices for kids and their parents.” They are also being featured in Momentum Magazine’s spring issue for their age-defying accomplishments.
