BY ALAN BURTON editorial@qns.com/@qns St. John’s University hosted its sixth annual St. Baldrick’s Day event this past Thursday in its D’Angelo Center, during which over 50 “shavees” volunteered to donate their hair to Locks of Love. In front of an ecstatic crowd, masters of ceremonies Billy Rabold and Dylan Powers called volunteers to the stage in groups of about fi ve to have their heads shaved by students from the Long Island Barber School. Women who did not wish to be shaved entirely bald were allowed to donate at least 8 inches. Rino Gzrinc was dubbed “Knight of the Baldtable” for donating hair during St. Baldrick’s for seven consecutive years. There was also a brief speech from an emotional April White, the cousin of Kristi Lyn Haley whom this year’s ceremony was dedicated in the memory of. April was joined onstage by the rest of Kristi Lyn’s family who looked on as April handed the mic off to St. John’s volleyball coach Jojo Persico, who sang “Arms Wide Open” by Creed over a slideshow tribute to Kristi Lyn. Lyn was a senior at St. John’s University when she lost her battle to cancer in 2000. It began as melanoma and soon spread to her brain. April, who is two years younger than her, described her as “a fi ghter.” The St. John’s volleyball team also came to the stage to make Kristi — an avid volleyball player — an honorary member of the St. John’s volleyball team, dedicating to her a signed jersey bearing the number 14. Rabold was inspired to both host and participate in the event after losing a high school friend to cancer at 15 and discovering St. Baldrick’s Day his freshman year at St. John’s. “My freshman year I attended my fi rst event and immediately fell in love. Seeing the nervousness, then relief, and then happiness all in a matter of a few minutes was something that has stuck with me for two years,” he said. The organizers projected they would raise more than $31,000 from the event, putting the total amount donated by the university from this and past events just over $200,000. St. John’s will be offi cially joining the Battle of the Bald on Nov. 17.
