chio Maltese,
a respected
artist and wife
of a former state
senator and a
longtime Middle

died on Dec. 7. She was 85.
Known for her “American
Women” series of paintings which
went on display at the Italian American

the beloved wife of former state Senator
Serphin Maltese who served in
Albany for 20 years. The two were

“I’ve always considered Serphin

embodies truth, justice and the
American way.”
A skilled painter, Constance
DelVecchio Maltese drew from Italian
history from antiquity and later

contemporary to the subject.
This project took years, starting
in 1986 and continuing on through
1992, marking 500 years since Christopher
Columbus made landfall in
the Americas.
“When we were fi rst married we
had a room and a half in Rego Park,”
she said in 2008. “We had a mattress
on the fl oor and a card table with
four chairs. I went to work, and he
went to school. Aft er the children
came daughters Andrea and Leslie
Serphin went to night school, and I
painted at home.”
In the mid-1980s, Maltese was
an Illustrator for Random House,
creating imagery for story books
and other literature.
Maltese got her start in illustrating
in 1958, working as art director for My
Baby Magazine on Madison Avenue
where she remained for 28 years.
Maltese attended the School of
Industrial Arts, Parson’s School of
Design, New York University and
Art Student’s League from 1946 to
1950, according to her LinkedIn page.

Glendale private school raising funds
to fi x boiler after bad repairs
BY MARK HALLUM

Redeemer Lutheran School in
Glendale is seeking donations
from the public through a Go-
FundMe campaign to fi x the boiler
in their facility aft er a contractor allegedly
botched a $75,000 replacement
project.
Currently at $2,325, Michael Williams,
the school principal, said the
boiler generates 25 to 90 percent of
the school’s heat. Redeemer Lutheran
hopes to raise $30,000 through
GoFundMe.
The fundraising campaign aims
not only to repair the boiler but also
to address other costs incurred, including
levies from the Department
of Buildings.
Williams said that the plumber who
was hired by the school is not able to
immediately address the problem. He
added that the company had trouble
reaching their architect and renewing
the Environmental Control Board
license.
“There were some compliance
issues that were pointed out by the
DOB on inspection, one of them
being that the new boiler was not
registered with the DOB, which is a
requirement,” Williams said. “Most
plumbers don’t want to touch it
because they didn’t offi cially work
on it, so that’s what we fi nd to be the
biggest challenge.”
Redeemer Lutheran School in Glendale seeks the public’s help in fi xing
its boiler.
When Williams calls the plumber,
based out of Staten Island, the phone
service used by the company says the
voice mailbox is full, he said. The company
could not be reached for inquiry.
On the GoFundMe page, the school
appeals to students, alumni and anyone
else interested in making a diff erence
and keeping their school warm.
“Last year we hired a company to
do a major overhaul of our heating
system. The cost was nearly $75,000,”
the GoFundMe page summary said.
“The company did not complete the job
correctly and has left us with nearly

$30,000 in bills in order to get it in
compliance with the city. If Redeemer
has been your grammar school, your
child has attended Redeemer, or you
just have it in your heart to help our
little Red School continue its mission
to serve Christ and his children, please
donate. Every little bit helps and will
make an impact.”
