WWW.QNS.COM RIDGEWOOD TIMES NOVEMBER 24, 2016 23 KIDS & EDUCATION Students at P.S. 376 honor Gloria Estefan at Hispanic Heritage dance recital BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected] @A_GIUDICEREPORT In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the dance performance team at P.S. 376 on the Ridgewood/Bushwick border paid tribute to Cuban-American singer and songwriter, Gloria Estefan, with a dance recital in the school’s auditorium. The performance team made up of fourth- and fi ft h-graders, led by dance teacher Elizabeth Scelisi, trained and rehearsed for six weeks, and even on some weekends, to perfect their numbers. The kids danced to some of Estefan’s most popular songs including “Turn the Beat Around,” “Get on Your Feet,” “Conga” and “Out of the Dark,” while other students presented the history of the famous singer in both English and Spanish. “I thought they were wonderful. I really did,” Scelisi said of her dance team. “I was worried that their nerves would show through since this was their fi rst performance, but they did great.” Scelisi said that they chose to dance to Estefan’s hits because she was a prominent Hispanic superstar, and the dance team enjoyed her music. “She was someone who was highlighted, and the kids saw her performances and loved the music,” Scelisi said. “We have a great collaboration with the students. We listen to their input. Learning about the arts gives them the opportunity to express themselves.”
