UNITED WE MUST STAND AGAINST ISIS TERROR Following Friday night’s deadly terrorist attacks in Paris, millions of Americans took to social media to offer their words of sorrow and outrage, vowing to “pray for Paris” and stand by this nation’s oldest ally as she wages war against ISIS. The sad reality, however, is that words and prayers alone won’t be enough to stop these deadly, heartless thugs. It’s going to require a variety of methods — including military action — to rid the world of this murderous scourge. ISIS is pure evil, the kind of which visited the world some 80 years ago with the rise of the Nazis in Germany. As evidenced by their actions in the territories of Iraq and Syria that they control, ISIS will murder any man, woman or child who isn’t in lockstep with their beliefs. They do this in the most barbaric ways imaginable — beheadings, crucifi xions, defenestration, immolations. This group poses a clear and present danger to the security and safety of the world. Their followers are everywhere; three suspected ISIS sympathizers have been found in Queens alone and charged by the federal government. Their reach on social media means that sleeper ISIS agents can be just about anywhere — not exclusively in groups of Middle East refugees, as many have wrongfully suggested in recent days. Some of these agents are citizens of the very nations they have attacked, or have plotted to attack. This terrorist lot is a malignant cancer on the world, with metastasizing cells fl oating about the global body. Cancer is often defeated through aggressive treatment, and this must be the same approach the nations of the world should take in defeating ISIS. Air strikes won’t be enough. The world must also fi nd and freeze all ISIS assets, as well as the assets of any nation, company or person fi nancially supporting these thugs. Here at home and abroad, governments must double down their investment in counter-terrorism methods to fi nd and jail any ISIS sympathizers before they cause harm elsewhere. While all this is done, we in Queens must be ever vigilant to potential threats. The “see something, say something” motto is sound advice indeed. But we must also grow our own tolerance — not just for longer lines at security checkpoints, but also for people. We must be careful not to associate every Muslim with ISIS, a group that has targeted and murdered Muslims the same way it targets and murders Christians, Jews and Yazidis. ISIS governs by only one principle: might is right. The world must not accept or ignore it; the world must vanquish it.
