Previously the board’s vice president, Arcuri was elevated to leader of the Queens Borough Public Library’s fund-raising wing, founded in 1988 to secure revenue from private entities and residents to support library programs. “I’m honored to assume the role of board president,” Arcuri said in a statement on Monday. “Growing up in Glendale, queens, I spent much of my formative years at the historic Glendale branch library, where I learned how to read and developed my love of history. Eric Ulrich will be accepting donations at the Ozone Park and Rockaway district offices until Nov. 20. Ulrich’s veterans food drive is being run in partnership with the Food Bank For New york, he stated. Both Welcome donations of non-perishable items including canned meats; soups; vegetables; canned or dried fruit; baby formula; peanut butter; and dried goods like pasta, rice and grains. Ulrich has pledged to bring the -SEE LIBRARY ON PG. 56- donations to local kitchens and soup pantries in south Queens that serve veterans, he said in a statement. In New York City, according to the Food Bank For NYC, nearly 30 percent of veterans rely on emergency food, Ulrich stated. “In honor of their selfless sacrifice, we need to ensure that local food pantries and soup kitchens are equipped to assist our brave men and women with hot meals this upcoming holiday season,” Ulrich said. Revisiting Colonial Days In Ridgewood History lovers took a trip back in time to the 17th century at the Onderdonk House in Ridgewood last Saturday, Nov. 8, during the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society’s Dutch Colonial Day celebration. The event offered guests a glimpse into the life of settlers who came to New Netherlands (later New York) and what would become Queens County during the 1600s and 1700s. The Onderdonk House, butil in the late 18th century, is recognized as one of the few surviving Dutch American farmhouses in the U.S. Guests enjoyed tours of the house and browsed an exhibit on the Battle of Brooklyn, a key battle in the American Revolution. (photo: Marcin Zurawicz) Assemblyman Mike Miller presented Summer Reading certificates to the students of Middle School 210 in Ozone Park on Thursday, Nov. 6. At the event, Miller said he was proud to recognize the accomplishments of these students. Over 50 students at MS 210 pledged to read for 15 minutes a day for 40 days, during their summer vacation.
