‘No’ is the only choice on Kavanaugh
Where does one begin to
express their disgust over
Brett Kavanaugh and the
Republican-led Senate’s blatant eff ort
to “plow through” his Supreme Court
nomination, no matter what?
Last week, Dr. Christine Ford testifi ed
under oath before the Senate Judiciary
Committee that Kavanaugh allegedly
sexually assaulted her more than 30
years ago. Kavanaugh responded with
an unsettling blend of rage and bewilderment
that suggested he’s truly unqualifi
ed for a job that requires the best
legal minds to use temperament and
mature judgement to decide on cases
that impact the lives of the entire nation.
All the while, only Democrats
seemed to care about what Dr. Ford
had to say. Republicans on the committee
expressed more sympathy for
Kavanaugh than to Dr. Ford for having
to endure further questioning on troubling
accusations.
Both Kavanaugh and Republicans
seem to think this is all one vast, left -
wing conspiracy against them.
For those who want to claim that
Democrats are obstructing the eff ort
to confi rm Kavanaugh, let’s remind
them of one name: Merrick Garland.
Senate Republicans, under the
leadership of the disgraceful Mitch
McConnell, punted on considering
Garland’s nomination to the Supreme
Court in 2016, using the lame excuse
of an election year as the reason to
abdicate their constitutional duties.
But because Kavanaugh’s a Republican,
they can’t confi rm him fast enough
— regardless of how many accusers
have stepped forward against him.
It took the eff orts of two Queens
women who angrily confronted Arizona
Senator Jeff Flake, a member of the
Senate Judiciary Committee, in a viral
video to put something of a bump in
the road. Flake voted for Kavanaugh’s
confi rmation to be moved to the Senate
fl oor, but he was able to delay the vote
by no less than a week to allow for
an investigation into the accusations
against the nominee.
But even that investigation’s being
stymied by the White House, which
has directed the FBI to limit the scope
and scale of the inquiry.
This should lead every reasonable
person to wonder just what the hell
are Kavanaugh and the Republicans
trying to hide. If Kavanaugh’s as
innocent as he proclaims himself to
be, if he truly has nothing to hide, he
should have no problem allowing the
investigation to proceed unfettered.
Democrats should have no illusions
about keeping the seat vacant
until 2020, nor should they follow
the dirty example that McConnell
set with Garland. However, they must
insist that someone other than Brett
Kavanaugh fi ll it. They must do this
with the same fury which Kavanaugh
and Senate Republicans have defended
themselves.
The fate of the Supreme Court
hangs in the balance. Hyperpartisan
politics is killing our country, and a
hyperpartisan, unstable character
like Kavanaugh will only bring chaos
out of the order upon which this court
has held for more than 240 years.
