Police give locations of mailbox ‘fi shing’ incidents

Police have provided more
information related to the
recent spike in mailbox fi shing
incidents in Glendale, Maspeth and
Ridgewood over the past month.
On Aug. 2, the 104th Precinct
sent out another alert updating the
community about the crimes and
identifying specifi c mailboxes where
the fi shermen have been dropping
a line. Detective Thomas Bell of the
Community Aff airs Unit also clarifi ed
that there were 15 incidents of mailbox
fi shing in the precinct’s most recent
28-day report, fi ve of which are being
investigated in other jurisdictions.
The update came aft er Councilman
Robert Holden also issued an advisory
about the local surge in mailbox fi shing
on Facebook.
The mailboxes at the following locations,
some of which have already been
retrofi tted in an attempt to prevent
mailbox fi shing, were involved in the
recent spree, according to Bell:
• 69-36 Myrtle Ave. (near the Glendale
USPS station)
• Gates Avenue and Seneca Avenue,
Ridgewood
• 67th Place and Myrtle Avenue,
Glendale
• Fresh Pond Road and 59th Drive,
Maspeth
• Menahan Street and Grandview
Avenue, Ridgewood
• 76th Street and Myrtle Avenue,
Glendale
• 64th Place and Cooper Avenue,
Glendale
• 79th Place and 77th Avenue,
Glendale
• Fresh Pond Road and Putnam Avenue,
Ridgewood
• 75th Street and 78th Avenue,
Glendale
The 104th Precinct has been in
contact with the Postal Inspector for
the area who is working alongside
detectives to investigate the crimes. In
the meantime, police urge residents to
take extra care when mailing checks
or other documents with sensitive
information.
