New York gubernatorial
candidate Cynthia Nixon
added another endorsement
from a Queens Democrat
this week when Assemblyman
Andrew Hevesi announced his
support for her campaign.
The July 18 announcement
from Hevesi marks the fi rst sitting
Assembly member endorsement
for Nixon, who is running in
the Democratic primary against
Governor Andrew Cuomo in September.
In his remarks, Hevesi
praised Nixon as someone the
people of New York can trust, and
shunned Cuomo as a constant liar.
“In this time of Trump, we must
not look to combat a serial liar
with another serial liar,” Hevesi
said in a press release. “We need
real Democrats who defend our
values, even when it’s tough, and
who can inspire and challenge
our state to do better. Cynthia is
the right choice, and I urge voters
to support her in September.”
One of his main sources of
frustration with Cuomo was the
governor’s proposal in the state
budget that would have placed a
cap on the amount of reimbursement
received by New York City
programs that support families at
risk of having children removed
and placed into foster care.
While that proposal ultimately
did not make it into the fi nal budget
for fi scal year 2019, Hevesi made
reference to the governor’s proposal
in his remarks and added that
“he consistently pushes policies that
hurt vulnerable New Yorkers, the
homeless, human traffi cking victims,
people on public assistance.”
Nixon, citing mutual commitments
to combating homelessness
and housing issues as well as the
social safety net, thanked Hevesi
for speaking in her favor.
“Assemblymember Hevesi has
spent decades fighting for New
York’s tenants, victims of human
traffi cking, and low-income families
and at-risk children,” Nixon
said. “He is a passionate champion of
fi ghting for lower-income families
and making New York a fairer, more
equitable state for everyone. I am
honored to have his endorsement
and look forward to working with
him in the Assembly as governor.”
