FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com JUNE 30, 2016 • TIMES 27 old timer Corpse in a car & baseball led the news 31 years ago The Ridgewood Times celebrated its 77th anniversary on August 1, 1985 by doing what it does best: printing a newspaper fi lled with exciting stories about local news and events. Even in the dog days of summer, while most people were away on vacation, there were plenty of interesting items to be found. Let’s take a look inside the issue to see what was happening: • The top story blared a headline “Corpse Discovered in Abandoned Car,” and came with a picture of police checking out the vehicle in Ridgewood on the morning of July 30, 1985. Police found the body of 24-year-old John Rivera with gunshot wounds inside a light-blue Buick Regal sedan parked on Woodward Avenue between Stockholm and Hart streets. Residents had reported that the vehicle had been parked at the location since July 28. Various drug paraphernalia If you have any memories and photos that you’d like to share about “Our Neighborhood: The Way it Was,” write to The Old Timer, c/o Ridgewood Times, 62-70 Fresh Pond Rd., Ridgewood, NY 11385, or send an email to editorial@ridgewoodtimes.com. All mailed pictures will be carefully returned upon request. were recovered at the scene. • The bottom half of the front page featured a story about the city allocating $100,000 in additional funds from the city to plant 330 street trees around Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village. The funding was on top of $180,000 that the city allocated in its 1986 fi scal year budget to plant 900 street trees locally. “All of this tree money has been gotten for our communities because of the great team effort played by our public offi cials,” said Paul Kerzner, president of the Greater Ridgewood Restoration Corporation. “Together, we civic leaders have worked with our public offi cials over the past year to secure this funding from the city.” • Our editorial on Page 5 focused on problems related to the operation of the M train during morning and evening rush hours. We published the MTA’s report- ed time table for rush hour M trains leaving and arriving at Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village, calling it a “fairy tale” because the trains were notoriously late. We encouraged readers to submit problems related to the M line to the Community Board 5 offi ce in Glendale. • Page 14 featured a story on Glendale’s Sacred Heart School Novice A baseball team, which captured the Brooklyn- Queens Diocesan C h a m p i o n s h i p on July 20 of that year with a 12-7 win over St. Francis DeSales. After falling behind early, Sacred Heart took a 4-3 lead into the fourth inning, but St. Francis bounced back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Sacred Heart then took the lead with a four-run fi fth, highlighted by a double from Kenny Hinz and a triple from Chris Byrne. The school’s coaches, John Marry, Bobby Borst and Bob Nashak, called it “a game all coaches could be proud of.” • We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Page 19 featured a story about the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Intermediate baseball team wiinning the CYO championship with a 10-7 victory over Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It was quite a victory for the Medalmen, who were down 7-1 and being no-hit after 5 1/3 innings of baseball. They scored nine runs in the sixth inning, eight of which came with two out, highlighted by a “tape-measure home run” from third baseman Anthony Pietreniello and a single from leftfielder Felix Kutlik. “This is a fine bunch of men,” said Coach Richard Sorice. “They always had the desire to win, and proved their capabilities this season. I wish all of them good luck in high school.” • The issue also featured plenty of deals from local advertisers. The Fair, then located at 58-01 Myrtle Ave. in Ridgewood, offered four-piece King size sheet and pillow case sets for $29.50; 100 percent polyester pillows at 2 for $10; and 20 percent off all gifts from its gift department. Boss Motors at 58-02 Metropolitan Ave. in Ridgewood had for sale a 1979 Buick LeSabre LTD for $3,995;l an 1982 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with a 6 cylinder engine at $6,695; and a 1982 Cadillac Eldorado for $12,500. If you needed cash to help you buy that car of your dreams, Home Federal Savings Bank--with locations in Ridgewood, Glendale, Forest Hills and Howard Beach, offered car loans at a 11.25 percent adjustable rate of interest. • Looking for a home? Crifasi Real Estate offered a one-family brick ranch home near Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village for $185,000; a one-family, two-family brick home near Sacred Heart Church in Glendale for $209,000; and a two-family home in Ridgewood for $175,000. • How about renting a home?
