Home Fatally Struck By Car On Avenue by Robert Pozarycki Blocks away from his home, an Ozone Park man was struck and killed by a car along Atlantic Avenue last Saturday night, Apr. 26, police reported. Law enforcement sources identified the victim as 52-year-old Oscar Pauzhi of 95th Street. Reportedly, the deadly accident occurred at 9:05 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 107th Street. According to information obtained by police, a 2006 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 56-year-old man was traveling westbound on Atlantic Avenue in the right lane. As the vehicle neared 107th Street, authorities stated, Pauzhi entered the roadway in attempting to cross the avenue from south to north and was hit by the vehicle. The driver reportedly stopped his vehicle and remained at the scene following the accident. Members of the 102nd Precinct and EMS units rushed to the location. Pauzhi, who suffered severe head trauma, was pronounced dead on arrival at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. No charges were filed against the driver, and no criminality is suspected, sources stated. An inquiry by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing, police said. Mayor Expands City CO Detector Rules Includes More Places Of Assembly by Robert Pozarycki The carbon monoxide (CO) detector requirement in its building code was expanded through legislation signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio last Friday, Apr. 25. Intro. No. 11, which passed the City Council unanimously in an Apr. 10 vote, mandates the installation of CO detector systems in new buildings with assembly places and that feature a fire alarm system. Existing structures are grandfathered in, but owners will be required to install CO detectors if and when fire alarm systems are replaced. The current building code requires that property owners install the detectors in dwelling units served by any kind of appliances (such as a stove or hot water heater) that may produce carbon monoxide—a colorless, odorless gas that is fatal to anyone exposed to excessive amounts in a short period of time. “This important bill amends the New York City building code to increase the number of life-saving carbon monoxide detectors in our city,” de Blasio said before signing the bill last Friday. “East year, about 200 people are hospitalized because of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, and people are dying needlessly.” The law de Blasio signed requires CO detectors in places of assembly such as restaurants, taverns, nightclubs, bars, catering halls, -SEE DETECTOR ON PG. 54- R.H.
