St. John’s University is having a blood drive in Taffner Fieldhouse and would love for the Queens community to come out and save a life. Friday, March 4 If you’re seeking a crash course in Nuyorican culture and history, the Museum of the Moving Image will be hosting a panel discussion titled “Nuyorican Cinema: Framing Identity” featuring a prominent lineup of fi lmmakers, content creators and curators exploring New York’s wealth of Puerto Rican fi lmmakers, writers and actors hailing from the Lower East Side, the South Bronx, Spanish Harlem and the south side of Williamsburg along with the sociological and political challenges they’ve faced as a community and how it has shaped their work. The 7:30 p.m. discussion will be moderated by Edwin Pagán. The Museum of the Moving Image is located on 36-01 35th Ave. in Astoria. The 9th Annual Panorama Challenge will be held at the Queens Museum from 7 to 10 p.m. The event will feature a game of trivia at the Panorama of the City of New York. Mike Morgenthal will act as the evening’s MC as teams of around 10 will use clues from the Panorama along with musical hints to answer trivia questions. All proceeds will go to supporting the City Reliquary Museum and Queens Museum. The winning team will have their names etched onto the Panorama Challenge Trophy at the museum. Admission is $15 per person and a discounted membership with the purchase of a City Reliquary Museum or Queens Museum membership. Come out and test your knowledge of the city. Queens Museum is in the New York City Building in Flushing Meadows. If you’re into interpretive dance, Smashworks Dance Collective and Roots in Revolution will be performing at Green Space Studio. The performances will heavily feature props and explore gender inequality and what it means to be “whole” as a woman in the context of American gender roles as well as the feminine identity in general. The show will begin at 8 p.m. and it’s $15 to get in. Green Space Studio can be found on 37-24 24th St. in Long Island City. EDITOR’S PICK A fun day with the family can be found at the New York Hall of Science’s workshop on how to make a bubble-blower from everyday objects and recycled materials. The workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, and will charge $8 per family on top of NYSCI admission. Discounts of $5 per family are available to members. Be sure to wear old clothes you don’t mind getting messy. The New York Hall of Science is on 47-01 111th St. in Corona. Saturday, March 5 Flushing Town Hall will be hosting a De Temps Antan show at 8 p.m. following a 7 p.m. dance lesson. Admission is $16 for members and $10 for students. Folkwords says of the collective, “They have enough power to drive a nuclear furnace. If you could remain seated during their performance you were either deaddrunk or dead.” R2 Magazine also praises the group: “Driven by the relentless foot percussion, this set of tunes rocks!” Flushing Town Hall can be found on 137-35 Northern Blvd. in Flushing. The Bayside Historical Society is hosting a 2 p.m. presentation and book signing for Stephen R. Barney Jr. and his book tracing the genealogy of his family in Flushing Meadows all the way back to the late 1700s. Admission is $5 for non-members and free for Bayside Historical Society members. Alley Pond Environmental Center is having a “Young Chefs” youth cooking class to teach kids how to prepare pepperoni roll-ups fi lled with cheese and herbs along with fruit smoothies. Register now at the center’s website as the event is limited to eight participants. The class is from noon to 1:30 p.m. and the registration fee is $18 for members and $24 for nonmembers. Alley Pond Environmental Center is on 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Little Neck. St. Francis DeSales Church in the Rockaways will kick off the 41st annual St. Patrick’s Day parade with a Mass for peace and justice in Ireland at 9:30 p.m. with the actual parade beginning at 1 p.m. sharp starting from Beach 130th Street and up Newport Ave. before ending by the St. Camillus parking lot on 100th Street where there will be a parade awards ceremony with trophies for honorees and winners. Admission is free and all are welcome. The church is located on 129th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Rockaway Beach. Sunday, March 6 Niall O’Leary of the Irish School of Dance and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s former director of Arts, Culture and Tourism Lenwood Sloan will be hosting a dance workshop titled The Cultural Crossroads of Ireland & Africa exploring the cultural intersections of Irish and African-American dance at Flushing Town Hall. Admission the 2:15 p.m. show will be $7 for general admission, $4 for members and free for members. Members must call the box offi ce and reserve tickets to attend the workshop. Flushing Town Hall is located on 137-35 Northern Blvd. in Flushing. The Con Brio Ensemble will be performing at the Voelker-Orth Museum at 2 p.m. The nonprofi t organization will be playing chamber music featuring a number of styles and instruments. The museum is located on 149-19 38th Ave. in Flushing. The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, NYC’s oldest beer garden, presents the Vinyl Revolution Record Show featuring an all-day set by DJ Laura Rebel Angel.
