4 FEBRUARY 23, 2017 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM Teenager shot by cops after Bushwick store robbery Ridgewood man dies in Brooklyn after tip jar theft arrest BY ROBERT POZARYCKI RPOZARYCKI@QNS.COM @ROBBPOZ A  Ridgewood man who was found dead in a Brooklyn apartment building on Feb. 20 was apparently arrested two days earlier on petit larceny charges in his home neighborhood, law enforcement sources said. Anthony Toma, 25, of Madison Street was found unconscious and unresponsive in the hallway of an apartment building on Willoughby Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the morning of Feb. 20. Sources familiar with the investigation said Toma had been released from jail the previous day; he was arrested by the 104th Precinct  on Feb. 18 for allegedly stealing a tip jar from Corato II Pizzeria, located at 66-94 Fresh Pond Rd. in Ridgewood. Officers from the  79th Precinct  and EMS units found Toma’s body at 10:57 a.m. on Feb. 20; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The New York Daily News reported that police believe Toma may have died in one of the apartments, and one or more of the residents may have moved him into the hallway aft er he expired. Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body, which was transferred to the Offi ce of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. No arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing. The trouble began just before 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 19, when the unidentif ied man—identif ied as Sergio Reyes, 18, of Wilson Avenue—allegedly held up the Garden Deli located at 185 Starr St. NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan said the perpetrator displayed a weapon during the stickup. After he fled, officers from the 83rd Precinct were called to the scene. Witnesses provided a sergeant and two police officers with a description of the perpetrator. Moments later, authorities said, the responding officers spotted Reyes walking west on Starr Street. For information: Paul Kerzner, President - 718 381 3366 They approached him in front of an apartment building on Starr Street near Irving Avenue, across the street from Maria Hernandez Park, and ordered him to stop. Monahan said that Reyes—seen holding a black firearm—turned around and pointed it at the officers, who then opened fire, striking him multiple times. People took to social media immediately and warned others to stay away from the area. Some reported police helicopters and a total closure of Maria Hernandez Park. Immediately following the incident, residents of Starr Street were asked not to leave their buildings. Officers recovered the suspect’s weapon, which was determined to be an imitation pistol. Paramedics brought the man to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had been reportedly shot nine times. The investigation is ongoing.
