Box 860299, Ridgewood, N.Y. 11386-0299 A YEAR Stringer: City Spends Big On Snow study found. Over that same 12 year period, annual snowfall totals averaged 35.9 inches per year, with a low of 6.8 inches in FY 2012 and a high of 61.5 inches in FY 2011. Though the total costs vary each year, the per-inch cost of snow and ice removal followed a declining cost curve and averaged $1.8 million from FY 2003-FY 2014, according to the studies findings. However, the study showed the costs per inch of snow removal are higher in light snow years than in heavier ones. The lowest cost per-inch was $740,000 in FY 2003 when the city had 55 inches of snow. The highest cost was $4.4 million per inch when only 6.8 inches of snow fell in FY 2012. The reason for these higher costs in years with little snowfall is because, no matter how much snow falls, the city must take certain precautions to be ready for any winter weather event. This includes pre-salting streets, maintaining winter equipment and having units ready to deploy when then snow hits. The optimal amount of snowfall for per-inch costs is approximately 43 inches. Although, if snowfall totals exceed the band within 24 and 56 inches per season, history shows a rise in costs on a per inch basis due to the magnitude of the task at hand. The cost for personal services also tracked the pattern of lower costs per inch when snowfall fell within the average range. Higher costs were seen when snowfall was less than 13 inches or greater than 43 inches. -CONTINUED FROM PG. 10- FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @timesnewsweekly
