In the midst of winter’s coldest
months, a Ridgewood church that
has served the community for
more than 100 years has a broken heating
system, and it needs help raising
money for a new one.
Covenant Lutheran Church on
the corner of Catalpa Avenue and
60th Lane launched a GoFundMe
campaign on Jan. 26 in an attempt to
spread the word that it has no heat.
According to Reverend Michael Ross,
pastor at the church for the last 33
years, some of the younger parishioners
came to him with the idea of
starting the campaign.
Ross said that the 30-year-old boiler
inside the church died and could not be
repaired, and the chimney must also
be re-lined. The large church seats
200 people in the sanctuary alone and
has two parish halls, Ross said, but the
cold has not stopped the parish from
worshiping.
“For the past two or three weeks,
we’ve worshiped in a parish hall with
coats on because it’s a little bit warmer
in there,” Ross said. “As the pastor, I
can say it’s hard to consecrate with
gloves on.”

So far the GoFundMe page has raised
$1,745 in four days, but separate contributions
in the form of checks brought
to the church have allowed them to
come very close to their $24,500 goal.

The contributions have been enough
to get the work started, Ross said, with
the old boiler being removed last week
and the installation of the new one
beginning this week.
