HER HAT’S IN SPKR. RACE by Robert Pozarycki Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan—who has represented areas of western Queens for three decades—formally announced on Wednesday, Jan. 28, her candidacy to succeed the indicted Sheldon Silver as Assembly speaker. “In my 30-year Assembly career, I have conducted myself with honesty and integrity,” Nolan said in a statement sent to the Times Newsweekly. “Serving the people of New York State has been my only job—whether it be my own constituents, school children or working men and women in our state. Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle of upstate Rochester will serve as interim speaker until the chamber elects a permanent replacement. The election is expected to take place no later than Feb. 10; Assembly Democrats, having a large majority, will likely elect one of their own to the post. Currently chair of the Assembly Education Committee, Nolan represents the 37th Assembly District which covers all or parts of Ridgewood, Maspeth, Middle Village, Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City and Astoria. If elected, she would be the first female Assembly speaker in New York’s history. “The press has written extensively about the sexual harassment cases that have occurred in the legislature over the last few years,” Nolan said. “It is past time for that ‘culture’ to end once and for all. I am committed to doing just that.” Nolan pledged to be a speaker who would “listen to the members of the Democratic majority conference with respect and dedication,” adding that many of her own colleagues in government urged her to seek the speakership. “It is time for this institution to return to the high standards that the people of our state rightfully demand and expect,” the assemblywoman concluded. “I stand ready to work with my colleagues to do just that for the -SEE SPEAKER ON PG. 22- TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015 • 6 Amid Silver Scandal, Local Assemblywoman Seeks To Lead Chamber Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan is seeking to become the New York State Assembly’s first female speaker. 20% of diabetics will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime. ©Times Newsweekly - 2014 - PUGMO VVIILLLLAAGGEE CCAASSHH FFOORR GGOOLLDD IMMEDIATE CASH!
