Ridgewood Times Counties’ www.timesnewsweekly.com On Twitter @timesnewsweekly THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015 50 CENTS After Shutting Down, City Spared Big Blizzard’s Brunt Hours before the storm, forecasters predicted the five boroughs could get up to three feet of the white stuff and sustained gusts of at least 50 mph between Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 26-28. The ominous prognostications prompted consumers to flood local supermarkets to stock up; schools and businesses to close early; and government officials to close both streets and transportation services. New York City went into full shutdown mode as the storm approached. Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered all streets closed to vehicular traffic as of 11 p.m. Monday to allow for Sanitation Department plows and emergency vehicles to get through. -SEE BLIZZARD ON PG. 11- Making It ‘Good For Queens’ Katz noted roots in Queens. She grew up in Forest Hills; attended public schools in the city; studied law at St. John’s; and now raises her two children in the very home she grew up in. Noting that Queens is part of her family, Katz said the borough’s extended family is continuing to grow, as half of its 2.2 million residents were born outside of the United States. “Both new arrivals and longestablished families create the communities which make it uniquely attractive, for visitors and for investors alike,” Katz said. “And it’s the voices of all these families that have been the focus of my first year, hearing their concerns and appreciating their input as priceless to our government’s decisionmaking process.” With that in mind, she instituted a motto for her tenure: “If it’s good for our families, it’s good for Queens.” To help families in southeast Queens who face problems with flooding, foreclosures and sanitation, her office created a first-ever inter-agency task force to fix these problems and Big Apartment Bldg. Going Up In R’wood Largest Project Yet In Area Essex Capital Partners recently began the opening stages of erecting a seven-story, 90-unit apartment building at 1614 and 1626 Madison St., the former site of the Philru Knitting Mills. As previously reported in the Times Newsweekly, the structure would provide a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments available to renters. More than 63,000 sq. ft. of residential space would be created, averaging to about 700 sq. ft. per unit. According to a report in Crains New York, the plans include a specialized business center “designed for renters who work from home.” Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016. Through a holding company known as 1614Madison Partners LLC, Essex Capital purchased the site—previously occupied by two warehouses—for about $4.7 million, according to Finance Department records. It later secured mortgages totalling just over $18.25 million.
