A HOLY SCHOOL TO SHUT DOWN Fiscal Pain Forces Most Precious Blood’s Demise Opened in 1957 at 32-52 37th St., Most Precious Blood’s enrollment significantly declined in recent years and its building “is in need of costly structural repair,” according to Fr. William Krlis, Most Precious Blood Church’s pastor. Repairs at the school are estimated to cost more than $2.2 million, but an additional $3 million is needed to renovate the church—and the parish does not have the proper funds to complete both necessary tasks, Krlis noted. In demonstrating the severe problems, Krlis noted that the church building’s south wall began separating from the rest of the structure last year, requiring temporary shoring until permanent repairs could be made. Moreover, enrollment at Most Precious Blood fell below 200 students this year. Approximately 191 children attend the school, down 20 from the previous year, according to Krlis. “While financially we have not run deficits, these essential building repairs—combined with declining enrollment—will not allow us to continue,” the pastor said in an open letter posted on Most Precious Blood School’s website. “This decision was not made easily. After much dialogue with all relevant parties ... I presented these facts to Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. With his support, I made this painful decision in the best interest of the parish community.” Students currently enrolled from kindergarten through seventh grades are encouraged to enroll at other Catholic schools for September. Walter Barnes, 47, of East 59th Street in Old Mill Basin appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court last Wednesday, Jan. 7, to answer to charges in an eightcount indictment that include predatory sexual assault, criminal sexual act, attempted rape and criminal impersonation. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Patricia Williams, who presided over the arraignment, ordered Barnes held on $200,000 bond or $250,000 cash and to return to court on Feb. 27. If convicted, he could serve up to 25 years behind bars. “Barnes is accused of impersonating a police officer to commit a cowardly and deplorable crime against an innocent young woman,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. “He will now be held accountable for his actions.” Law enforcement sources said the incident occurred at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2014 in the area of Aberdeen Street and Bushwick Avenue. According to prosecutors, the 18-year-old female victim was walking to a nearby store when Barnes, who was driving through the area, flagged her down from his vehicle and offered her a ride. When she got inside the car, police said, Barnes allegedly claimed to be a police officer and threatened to arrest her unless she performed a sex act for him. Moments later, authorities noted, Barnes drove the victim to He’s Wanted For Elm. Sex Assault The NYPD asks for the public’s help in finding the man pictured above who is wanted for a New Year’s Day attempted rape in Elmhurst. According to police, the perpetrator sexually assaulted and stabbed a woman with a knife in the area of 94th Street and 56th Avenue at about 8:15 a.m. on Jan. 1. The incident was reported to the 110th Precinct; the victim was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing a long coat, a black scarf with white stripes and gloves while carrying a duffel bag. The case was presented to the NYPD Queens Special Victims Squad, with Det. James Ropenus assigned to the case. Anyone with information regarding the sexual assault or the suspect’s whereabouts that could prove helpful is asked to call Detective Ropenus at 1-718-520-9277 or Detective Borough Queens North at 1-718-520-9200. This ban, which is part of Local Law 142, was announced last Thursday, Jan. 8, by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration and the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in conjunction with corporations, non-profits, vendors and stakeholders, after it was determined that EPS foam cannot be recycled. “These products cause real environmental harm and have no place in New York City,” de Blasio said. “By removing nearly 30,000 tons of expanded polystyrene waste from our landfills, streets and waterways, Thursday’s announcement is a major step towards our goal of a greener, greater New York City.” Products that use EPS foam include cups, plates, trays, clamshell containers and polystyrene loose fill packing, also known as “packing peanuts.” Local Law 142, which was passed by the City Council in December 2013, required the sanitation commissioner to determine whether ESP articles could be recycled in a environmentally effective, economically feasible and safe manner. If not, then EPS foam should be banned. The analysis of EPS foam items was based on a recycling strategy that would have added EPS foam items into the current metal, glass, plastic and carton commingled collection program. -SEE FOAM ON PG. 28- VVIILLLLAAGGEE CCAASSHH FFOORR GGOOLLDD IMMEDIATE CASH! ©Times Newsweekly - 2014 - PUGMO H I G H E S T P R I C E S P A I D GOLD AND SILVER EXCHANGE WWEE BBUUYY && SSEELLLL GGOOLLDD && DDIIAAMMOONNDDSS •• SSIILLVVEERR •• JJEEWWEELLRRYY ••WWAATTCCHHEESS Old Watches Can Be Worth A Fortune In Cash! -Cartier -Breitling -Rolex -Patek Philippe -Hublot and many more 32 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE SINCE 1981 OPEN: MONDAY THRU SATURDAY Don’t Sell Before You Get Our FREE Quote 718-386-4440 Own A Building?
