BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI smonteverdi@qns.com @smont76 Fourteen New York City kids and three stars from the New York Mets rounded the bases in a College Point store on Wednesday night for a holiday shopping spree helping local children. Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey and Brandon Nimmo wandered the aisles of Target at 135-05 20 Ave. on Dec. 14 to help local kids shop for their families. Th e inaugural holiday shopping spree was part of the team’s “Metsgiving” outreach campaign. “We’re feeling great,” Harvey said. “We had a good time out here. We’re having fun.” Harvey shopped with Jose and Joseph Castro, two teenagers from Ozone Park. “It’s not every day where you hang out with a Mets player,” Jose Castro said. “It was a lot of fun.” “It was kind of weird at fi rst, but as soon as you got to talk to the players, we said, ‘OK, this is kind of normal,’” Joseph Castro said. Th e two teenagers explained that their family — a family of eight — recently moved to a new apartment, and many of the items on their list were things they needed. “A microwave,” Jose said. “We bought pajamas for our sisters, our other brother — boots for him.” “My family’s in a tight situation right now with money,” Castro continued. “So if it wasn’t for this, we wouldn’t be actually getting the stuff that we need now. Th at’s why we made sure that we chose stuff that would be benefi cial in the long run.” “Th e two little girls I shopped with, their mom and their family have been through a lot,” Nimmo said. “To be able to just kind of bring a little bit of joy and happiness — they’re gonna have a great Christmas now … We were trying to get them to spend more money because they just aren’t used to it.” “Th e kids were pretty pedal to the metal, right outta the gate,” Syndergaard said. “Th ey knew exactly what they wanted.” Th e Mets worked with Th e River Fund New York to organize the event.
