STORY: UPDATE: Parents & students at high school in Flushing want embattled acting principal fi red now SUMMARY: The Townsend Harris High School community has spoken out against their acting principal at the recent PTA meeting and wants her to be removed from her position. Time to go big at JFK Airport John F. Kennedy Airport is fi nally getting a hotel. Governor Andrew Cuomo helped break ground on the project last week near the iconic but closed TWA Terminal. Most other airports across the nation have a place for passengers to stay if, say, they’re on a layover between long-distance fl ights or for a quick conference with business colleagues. Cuomo painted the hotel as a major sign of progress, and indeed it is. But here’s a question: What if a traveler staying at this hotel wants to make a quick trip to Manhattan to see the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, or a big sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen? How’s that person going to get there? Th ey can hop on the AirTrain, then transfer to a crowded subway line-- such a trip will probably take about 45 minutes to an hour each way. Th ey can try hopping into a cab to get there, but they’ll only wind up sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffi c on the Van Wyck Expressway, the Belt Parkway and the other connecting roads. Getting into and out of JFK -- and LaGuardia Airport, too, since we’re talking about our beloved aerial gateways to the world -- is damn near impossible on a good day. Th ere is no one-seat ride between the airports and most of the rest of the city except by expensive cabs stuck in traffi c all the time. Th e hotel at JFK is progress, but we should demand something bolder. It’s time to build new infrastructure in Queens, and creating a new subway line between JFK and Manhattan would be a wonderful start. Have yourself a merry little weekend... It doesn’t happen oft en, but this weekend, millions of people across the world will be celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa almost simultaneously. Each of these holidays have something in common: the use of light. Hanukkah menorahs mark the eight days in which the Holy Temple menorah remained lit even though there was only enough oil to burn for a single evening. Candles are used during Christmas in part to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem that shined above where Jesus was born. Kwanzaa candles are lit for seven key principles, including self-determination, unity and faith. Th ough many see the darkness in the world today, let us pause for a moment to see the light of our own lives and appreciate the good that each of us have. It might not be easy to fi nd, but look carefully. It’s there. Whatever you believe, have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, a Joyous Kwanzaa, and our best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
