8 THE QUEENS COURIER • NOVEMBER 24, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI [email protected] @smont76 Panel to study airplane noise over Queens finally about to take off, says Board 7 member Dead man found floating in East River off Whitestone Point had been reported missing BY ROBERT POZARYCKI [email protected] @robbpoz A middle-aged man whose body was found fl oating in the East River on the Whitestone waterfront on the morning of Nov. 18 was reported missing days earlier, police sources said on Tuesday. While the NYPD did not disclose his identity, sources familiar with the investigation said the man had been reported missing fi ve days earlier on Nov. 13. His death is now being investigated as a possible suicide, it was noted. Law enforcement sources said the discovery was made at about 8:41 a.m. on Nov. 18 in the vicinity of Powells Cove Boulevard and Second Avenue near Whitestone Point. Offi cers from the 109th Precinct and EMS units responded to a 911 call at the location and pulled the unconscious and unresponsive man out of the water. The man, who appeared to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene; his body was transported to the Offi ce of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, according to police. The investigation is ongoing. Plans to fully form a roundtable addressing airplane noise issues are taking flight, Community Board 7 learned at its monthly meeting in Flushing on Monday, Nov. 14. Warren Schreiber, member of Community Board 7’s Aviation Committee, updated attendees on the status of the New York Airport Community Roundtable Committee for LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports. The roundtable’s formation was part of a plan initiated by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2014 seeking to alleviate and address the community’s concerns about the impact of overhead aircraft noise — but the roundtable has yet to be fully instated. “We still exist,” Schreiber said of the roundtable, of which he is also a member. While he couldn’t report on every part of the committee’s progress, Schreiber said that the group has made steps in the right direction. “We have been working very, very hard,” he said. “We have been meeting on a regular basis at Queens Borough Hall. The Borough President Melinda Katz has been terrific. She has provided support services; legal advice. The Port Authority has been involved … the governor has taken an interest … and the idea is to finally come up with the bylaws for the roundtable.” Schreiber said that the committee has written the required bylaws and that they will be published and voted upon at an upcoming roundtable meeting. Schreiber said he expects mixed reactions to the bylaws. “The coordinating committee will be supporting these bylaws and we’re going to ask for them to finally go to a vote before the full roundtable,” Schreiber said. Schreiber also described the Aviation Commitee’s recent trip to visit the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) located in Westbury, Long Island, which provides approach services for several large airports including LaGuardia and JFK airports. “This airspace is the busiest airspace in the United States,” Schreiber said. “There is no airspace that compares to it when you take into account all of those airports that are under its control.” Photo via Facebook/Jimmy Johnson, We Love Whitestone Police and EMS units responded to Whitestone on Friday morning after a body was found floating in the East River.
