The Queens World Film Initiative (QWFI) is a not-forprofit organization that aims to provide spaces that allow the public to participate in film screenings that focus on highquality indie films with captivating themes. According to the festival’s executive director, Katha Cato, the QWFF allows artists and audiences all over the globe to find “exciting ways to tell stories, both old and new.” The organization takes pride in being part of that conversation. The 2016 festival saw a 38 percent increase in attendees, and there’s little doubt that the 2017 festival will be bigger and better than ever. With over 20 submissions from the Queens area, films have also been submitted from around the globe and to date, represent 58 countries. Over 300 films have already been submitted, but there’s still time if you want to be a part of the festival. Last year’s festival saw a 137 percent increase in total submissions for the festival and a 125 percent increase of films by women. For 2017, the QWFF hopes to represent the very best filmmaking the borough has to offer. The seventh annual festival will be taking place at the Museum of the Moving Image, the Secret Theatre and P.S. 69 in Jackson Heights from March 14 to March 17.
