FRANCIS PREP CELEBRATES FEAST DAY WITH BISHOP MASSA, AND RECOGNIZES VETERAN FACULTY On Friday, October 2nd, St. Francis Prep held a special Mass, followed by a ceremony recognizing veteran faculty members. is was a special day that the entire Prep community took to celebrate the feast day of its patron, and one of the world’s most popular saints, Francis of Assisi. is particular year was made all the more special by Pope Francis’ recent visit to New York. When asked to re ect on the day, Prep Chaplain, Fr. Bill Sweeney immediately pointed out the Pope’s care for the marginalized and poor, sensitivity towards creation and the environment, and reaching out to families. Fr. Bill also expressed the importance of being in God’s prescence together. In fact, community and family are some of the most important elements of Franciscanism. Given the Prep student body is most de nitely a re ection of the profound diversity of Queens, this is crucial to daily life at the Prep. Newly appointed Auxilliary Bishop James Massa was the principal celebrant of the Mass, which also honored numerous faculty for their years of service. Bishop Massa, one of the Brooklyn Diocese’s recently appointed auxilliary Bishop’s was thrilled to be at Prep, only his second visit to the school. He felt that the students were lled with the spirit of St. Francis, particularly in the way they are being formed not only in their formal Religion classes, but in the many experiences the school provides, such as voluntary service opportunities. Massa, like so many at Prep made a connection to Pope Francis, and the way the ponti is living out the legacy of the 13th century saint. Six teachers were recognized for 15 years of service to Prep; Rachel Binaso (Mathematics), Jeanne Buccino (Art Department Chairperson), Laurie Cappiello St. Francis Prep students with the Superior General of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, Brother Christopher Thurneau, O.S.F. (Physical Education), Brian McCormack (Mathematics), Maureen O’Neill (Social Studies), and Gina Rizzi-Lorenz (English). ree teachers for 25 years of service; Peggy Bergin-Sementilli (Religion Department Chairperson), Denise Heckelman (Physical Education), and Ann Marie Rich (Science). And rounding out this special group, Sr. Philip Kiely, C.S.J., was recognized for 40 years of service to e Prep. “Having spent nearly 30 years in the same building, one might think, “routine.” Each day at St. Francis has a “new” element. I wouldn’t change a thing about my experience as an SFP student or a teacher of over 25 years. Enthusiasm, joy, and mutual respect have been my mantra for my years in education, a mantra taken from our patron, St. Francis of Assisi,” said Denise Heckelman, who was recognized for having taught for 25 years in the school. She is also an alum, and former coach. Brother Joseph Bach, O.S.F., a Franciscan Brother of Brooklyn, and a Religion teacher at Prep felt the day was special, given it came on the heels of Pope Auxilliary Bishop James Massa celebrates Mass at St. Francis Prep Sr. Philip Kiely, C.S.J., a 40 year veteran of Prep is recognized and celebrated by the Prep community Francis’ visit. “ e Pope spoke about our Franciscan values in both his civil and religious talks.” He went on to say that it was important for us to come together as a community and celebrate.
