WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
Q: One afternoon, while going down the stairs in the building
where I live, I slipped and fell. From the traffic over the generations,
every stairway step has a depression in it, capable of holding water.
Because the steps are made of marble, any liquid is difficult to see.
Usually, the super would have Jane do the mopping, in the
morning. This day, Dick did an unscheduled mopping, in the afternoon.
He put out no signs indicating that the floor was wet, he must
have let the mop get dirty, and he did not dry up the water. It was
covering the entire second floor.
After falling, I noticed that my pants were wet, that there was
a mop bucket with dirty water within five feet of the stairway, and
that the exterior door was propped open with a mop handle. After I
got up, I saw the super using the mop to dry up the floors and steps.
A: The one thing you don’t tell me is that someone actually saw
water on the steps on which you fell. All the same, you have an abundance
of circumstantial evidence, from which the causal sequence
may be inferred. Your attorney will not hesitate to argue that excess
water on a floor is circumstantial evidence of excess water on the flight
of stairs beneath it.
Dive into Learning at Notre Dame School!
We are happy to be beginning a new year at Notre Dame School. Our school enrollment continues to be healthy and we are proud to
say that we have not increased our tuition in eight years! Our Parents’ group is busy with both friend and fund-raising activities that
keep our school strong. We are keenly aware that our school is a school of choice and are very grateful that parents are making the
decision to send their children to our school. Some people regard Catholic Education as a luxury; others a sacrifice. However, we
consider Catholic School Education as an investment… in the future of your child, in the future of the Church and in the future of the
world. The dividends that are received from this investment are a faith foundation, a spiritual basis for daily living, and firm academic
groundwork. These dividends are for life. Because we are a school of choice, we must be educationally competitive with our public
school counterparts. We are proud to say that we are. Our technology is up-to-the-minute, with individual Chromebooks, iPads,
laptops, student response systems, a Video-Conferencing Center and our own IPTV closed circuit television system! This equipment
will allow our students to prepare live broadcasts throughout the school. Look for our YouTube Channel--Notre Dame School NHP. The
knowledge and skills base provided to our children are grounded in sound teaching. Order and structure are part and parcel of the
day because everyone is encouraged to be responsible for him/herself and the community as a whole. The dividends this offers to the
future is the development of responsible members of society who will continue to work for the common good.
All of us benefit from Catholic Education. The children who attend are the direct benefactors. Taxpayers benefit as the number of
students enrolled in Catholic Schools keeps the school taxes lower. Society as a whole benefits when the graduates, products of Catholic
School, join the workforce, often in service related fields.
Our Early Childhood Program continues to thrive. We are excited to have so many little ones and their families join our school community.
There is one session of Nursery, in which the half-day and full-day children are blended. We are happy to have four classes of
Pre-K, which includes those children who elect a half-day. The little ones come blessed with the eagerness to learn and discover. Every
day there is something new and different. We work hard to keep that spirit alive in all our students. While we cannot teach our
students everything, we do want to teach them to become lifelong learners.
Education, especially Catholic education, is not about feeding facts into children. It is about forming them for life. Children, no matter
the age, want to succeed and to feel loved. To that end, we must learn to work together for the good of all. If we help our children to
see that everyone is special and everyone has a contribution to make, the world can only become a happier and safer place. These are
dividends for us all! That is the responsibility of educators - teachers and parents alike. Here at Notre Dame we work together to make
those dividends have a high yield.
