Queensborough Community College President Diane Call welcomed staff, students and members of the community to its oncampus Art Gallery on July 28 to celebrate the first anniversary of the “Wenzhi Zhang Sculpture Garden” display, which features clay and bronze sculpture work by professor and artist Wenzhi Zhang. “Dr. Wenzhi Zhang is a very special, special person. She’s an extraordinary artist,” said Diane Call, president of Queensborough Community College. “And she’s an educator, which is how we first became such wonderful partners.” Zhang is a professor at the Guang Zhou Academy of Fine Arts, a master ceramicist, sculptor, lacquer artist and accomplished author. During the celebration, Zhang was honored with Certificates of Recognition from both Queensborough Community College and Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. “This garden is an important environment for us, because it’s for our students, and our faculty, and our staff, and all of the members of our community: in Queens, in New York City and beyond,” said Call. The Wenzhi Zhang Sculture Garden features 46 total sculptures by Zhang, including three that debuted at the celebration during a grand reveal. Each piece is a cast or fired clay or bronze creation on the human figure and is inspired by elements of Chinese or Korean folklore. After refreshments, attendees gathered outside in the handsome green, pastoral garden to participate in the unveiling of Zhang’s three new sculptures, titled “Woman of the World.” Zhang explained that each bronze sculpture is a deeply honest and personal representation of the different stages in a woman’s life. “It’s about a woman’s whole life: from youth, to mother, to old ages,” said Zhang. “A woman of the world.” “Here and throughout her work, Zhang deploys the language of art to reinterpret our world and to take hold of our lives and our history through the reinvention of familiar and outmoded symbols,” said Faustino Quintanilla, executive director of the QCC Art Gallery. The gallery and garden are open on the Queensborough Community College campus located at 222-05 56 Ave., Bayside. Visit qcc.cuny.edu/ artgallery for hours of operation.
