In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, Flushing Hospital Medical Center has been educating women on breastfeeding. They opened up a new room within their hospital that allows mothers to breastfeed in private. The room includes a chair, a changing table and a sink. It is open to both the public and employees who have babies. Flushing Hospital has been taking steps to create a babyfriendly certified hospital. They have been informing women on the benefits of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding lowers the risk of ovarian and breast cancer, costs less than formula, and even decreases your baby’s risk of having allergies. The lactation room is now open to the public for anyone who would like to have some privacy with their infants. Raging five-alarm Sunnyside inferno destroys factory, injuries firefighters By Katarina Hybenova khybenova@qns.com/@kamelka After a three-alarm fire decimated a supermarket in Whitestone on Aug. 2, Queens experienced another major fire on Aug. 3 when a furniture warehouse in Sunnyside went ablaze. The fire started at about 7:20 p.m. at a warehouse belonging to New York Custom Interior Millwork Corp located at 43-34 37th St., the Fire Department reported. The fire quickly spread, likely fueled by wood, plywood and other furniture-making materials. The warehouse likely wasn’t occupied at the time of the fire, according to an FDNY spokesperson. The five-alarm fire was extinguished at 11:22 p.m. thanks to the efforts of 168 firefighters on the scene. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, while two others suffered serious but nonlife threatening injuries and were taken to the area’s hospitals. An FDNY spokesperson told The Courier that cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious. The city officials warned locals last night to stay indoors to prevent inhaling the smoke. According to reports, the smoke sent the acrid smell all the way to the Upper West Side and Harlem. Weekend closure of Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst will be a travel nightmare By Robert Pozarycki rpozarycki@qns.com/@robbpoz Traffic tie-ups on Queens Boulevard between Woodhaven Boulevard and the Long Island Expressway are normally bad on weekends, but it figures to be even worse come the weekend of Aug. 20-21. The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it will close the six-lane main portion of Queens Boulevard between 57th Avenue in Elmhurst and 63rd Road in Rego Park from 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22. The shutdown is required in order for crews to “make urgent repairs to the Woodhaven Boulevard bridge over Queens Boulevard” near the Queens Center mall. Woodhaven Boulevard, however, will remain open during repairs. All traffic on Queens Boulevard will be directed to the service roads, effectively merging in both directions four lanes of traffic into two lanes. Parking in the area of the work zone will be restricted in order to accommodate vehicles, according to a DOT notice that The Courier received. To help reduce the amount of traffic through the area, the DOT will also close the exit ramp leading from the westbound Long Island Expressway to the westbound lanes of Queens Boulevard. The closure of the main portion of Queens Boulevard will likely cause significant delays not only for drivers but also for commuters who use the Q59 and Q60 buses, which travel on the Queens Boulevard service roads in the area. It will likely also impact the Q21, Q29, Q38, Q52 and Q53 buses, which stop near the Queens Center mall. As a result, drivers and commuters should seek alternate routes through the area and, if possible, use the subway; the R train stops at Woodhaven Boulevard on weekends. For more information, visit the DOT’s website or call 311. Photo by Nicole Kuliyev Flushing Hospital officials cut the ribbon on the new breastfeeding room.
